Coronation events
The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla will take place on Saturday 6 May, followed by a televised pop concert on Sunday 7 May.
Both events will be shown live in two venues within the Cumberland area - Carlisle’s Victoria Park (part of Bitts Park) and Workington Leisure Centre’s big screen. All events are free to attend, and timings have been extended on both days to coincide with the confirmed Coronation timetable.
As part of the preparations in Carlisle, the Queen Victoria monument in Victoria Park (part of Bitts Park) has undergone six-weeks of restorative work that has included cleaning and polishing the bronze sculpture and relief panels, cleaning and repointing the granite pedestal and steps, and sandstone substructure, plus repainting lettering. Work has now been completed in readiness for this weekend’s events.
The programme for the Carlisle events
Carlisle’s events will also include food and drink stalls.
- Saturday 6 May: 9am - 3pm, including the Coronation at 11am.
- Sunday 7 May: From 4pm including the screening of two-family films - Frozen and The Greatest Showman - and the live screening of King’s Coronation Concert. The event is likely to end around 10pm.
If you’re planning to attend the Carlisle event:
- The screen will be located near to the Queen Victoria monument in Bitts Park. The main pedestrian access to the site is via Bitts Park car park or Mayor’s Drive.
- Please bring your own seating.
- Bring along a picnic or buy food and drink from the food and drink concession stalls at the site.
- Tribe Carlisle will be open over both days.
- Please be aware that Bitts Park car park will be closed over the weekend, however there will some provision for some disabled parking. All other car parks will remain open and normal charges will apply.
- In addition to the public toilets in Bitts Park, there will also be additional portaloos.
The arrangements for the Workington screening
These will be family friendly events, with no alcohol allowed. Organisers encourage families to bring a picnic to enjoy the screenings as no food concessions will be available on either days. Please bring your own seating.
- Saturday, 6 May: 9am to 3pm, screening of the build up to the Coronation and the actual event.
- Sunday, 7 May: Coronation Concert only between 8pm - 10pm.

Top tips to enjoy an eco-friendly Coronation weekend
Having a Coronation party?
A reminder of a few top tips and suggestions to help you have a green eco-friendly party to celebrate the Coronation of the new King.
-
If you’re getting the bunting out for the Coronation, have you thought about making your own instead of buying from a shop? We all usually have unused /outgrown clothing lying around but perhaps it could be upcycled into colourful strings of bunting to brighten up your garden or village hall or whatever location your partying in.
-
Use reusable utensils, plates and cups and cloth napkins. Food tastes even better off proper plates and who has even tried successfully to cut stuff up with a flimsy plastic knife! If you really have to use disposables, why not try compostible items made from corn, potato starch or wood - these can be popped into your compost bin when you get home. Any unavoidable plastics should be taken home, rinsed and recycled in your local kerbside collection.
-
Any other recyclables such as drinks cans and glass drinks bottles can be recycled in your kerbside recycling collections too, but if you have too many for that then you could take them along to your local recycling centre (Bring Site).
-
If you are contributing food, take it in a cool box or bag. Keeping your food cool will help it stay fresher for longer until it`s time to sit down at the table and eat. Hopefully you`ve packed just the right amount so that nothing is wasted.
-
There are lots of things you can do with any leftovers if you do have too much. Why not take some home for a free lunch the next day, or share with any neighbours who couldn’t make it on the day.
-
Many foods can be frozen, even once cooked, to ensure they don’t go to waste. www.lovefoodhatewaste.com has lots of information about what you can freeze.
-
Take a box for your compostible leftovers. Fruit cores, bits of veg, nutshells and eggshells can all be added to your compost bin. Even some teabags can be added (check first though as some brands contain plastic). You can even collect bones from those chicken legs, fish bones and skin, and leftover dairy products as they can safely be added to the mix if you have a Food Waste Digester/Composter in your garden, (Green Johanna and Greencone are perfect for this). If you do use paper napkins, these can be composted too.
Wherever you are for the Coronation or even if you’re just out and about having a bank holiday picnic somewhere in our lovely county, have a great weekend and let’s hope the sun shines.
(Top tips brought to you with thanks from the Waste Reduction Team)
Bank holiday service changes
We are reminding residents of some changes to services over the bank holiday weekend and into the new working week.
Some offices - including Carlisle’s Civic Centre and Cumbria House, Allerdale House in Workington, and Market Hall in Whitehaven - will be closed on Monday 8 May. Online services will be available at www.cumberland.gov.uk.
The main customer number (0300 373 3730) is now closed and will reopen on Tuesday 9 May at 9am. There is a recorded message advising of the closure period and out of hours contact numbers for Highways, Homelessness, and Adults and Children’s Social Care, should anyone be calling in an emergency.
What is happening with your refuse and recycling collections
Former Allerdale area
Due to further strike action by some Allerdale Waste Services workers this week and next (w/b 8 May), there will be disruption to your waste and recycling collection service.
Collections will continue where possible on the usual days for domestic waste, but the collection service for recycling, paper and card, and garden waste will be temporarily suspended so please don’t put this out.
If crews are not able to collect waste on the scheduled day of collection, please take it back in, and the team will prioritise these collections the following time.
Due to the Bank Holiday, there will be no collections on Monday 8 May and collections throughout the week will take place one day later than normal. For example, bins normally collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday and collections due for Friday will take place on Saturday.
Former Carlisle and Copeland areas
There will be no changes to refuse and recycling collections during the bank holiday. Collections will take place on bank holiday Monday.

Flimby Flood Alleviation work update - road reopens two weeks early!
We are pleased to announce that a large proportion of the recent flood alleviation work in Flimby has been completed ahead of schedule and means that that A596 reopened on Sunday 30 April.
We are progressing the rest of the Flimby Flood Alleviation project initiated by Cumbria County Council.
To alleviate flooding in Flimby and Maryport, the Environment Agency provided £1.5 million from its ‘Flood Defence Grant in Aid’ fund.
Work on this section of the project began on Tuesday 11 April and was expected to take five weeks but due to the good weather the contractor has been able to complete the work in under three weeks which is great news for residents and businesses.
Whilst the A596 has reopened, a traffic management system will be in place in the coming weeks to facilitate continued flood alleviation work by the council and multi-agency teams. We will provide further information as work progresses.
If residents or businesses in the area have any questions, they are advised to contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 303 2992, or email A596.flimby@cumbria.gov.uk

International Compost Awareness Week: 7-13 May 2023
Held each year during the first full week of May, is International Compost Awareness Week. Its aim is to raise awareness of why we should all be composting our organic waste and using the compost we produce to enrich our garden soil. Composting is the simple way to turn your kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost for your garden – here’s what you can compost:
-
Grass cuttings and dead leaves.
-
Fruit and vegetable scraps and peel.
-
Plain cardboard (not the glossy cereal box kind).
-
Old cut flowers and bedding plants.
-
Prunings and dead plants (chop up your prunings as much as possible for faster composting).
-
Coffee grounds.
-
Tea bags (check your teabags don't contain plastic).
-
Pet droppings from any healthy veg-eating pets, including gerbils, rabbits, hamsters and birds, along with any bedding made from natural material or newspaper.
-
Eggshells (these help to keep the heap from smelling).
-
Newspapers (shredded paper can help to soak up excess moisture in a heap). If you want to learn more, why not attend a free workshop on Wednesday 24 May 2023, from 10am - 1pm; at Gosling Sike, near Carlisle.
You can learn how successful your composting is? Soggy, solid, smelly, or do you simply have no idea how best to use it?
Learn how to compost effectively with master composters at Garden Organic. This free workshop will teach you how to start composting, or do it better, using the compost demonstration site at Gosling Sike, near Carlisle.
