Flimby Flood Alleviation work update – road to reopen two weeks early!
Cumberland Council is pleased to announce that a large proportion of the recent flood alleviation work in Flimby has been completed ahead of schedule and means that the A596 will reopen on Sunday 30 April (weather permitting).
The council is now progressing the rest of the Flimby Flood Alleviation project initiated by Cumbria County Council.
To alleviate flooding in Flimby and Maryport, the Environment Agency provided £1.5 million from its ‘Flood Defence Grant in Aid’ fund.
Work on this section of the project began on Tuesday 11 April and was expected to take five weeks but due to the good weather the contractor has been able to complete the work in under three weeks which is great news for residents and businesses.
Whilst the A596 will reopen on Sunday, a traffic management system will be in place in the coming weeks to facilitate continued flood alleviation work by the council and multi-agency teams. Cumberland Council will provide further information as work progresses.
If residents or businesses in the area have any questions, they are advised to contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 303 2992, or email A596.flimby@cumbria.gov.uk
Cumberland Council would like to thank the community for their support and patience whilst the improvements are in progress and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Thanks also to local contractor Cubby Construction Ltd who have completed the works.

Connecting Communities in Carlisle
A Wellbeing and Information Centre in the heart of Carlisle open, Monday to Thursday between 10am and 4pm, is planning some events to attract visitors.
We joined together with Cumbrian third sector organisations to create the centre which opened in March as part of stage one of the project.
The centre provides information to the public on what the third sector and other community groups in the area can offer. The centre is based in the former New Seasons shop at 53 Scotch Street, on the edge of The Lanes Shopping Centre, opposite Carlisle Tourist Information Centre.
Partners include iCan Health and Fitness CIC, Age UK Carlisle and Eden, Glenmore Trust, Cumbria Health on Call (CHoC) and Cumberland Council.
Partners are asking the public to pop in before the first stage of the project ends on Friday 26 May 2023.
On Thursday 4 May there will be a service provided by HSBC at 2.30pm to raise awareness of potential scams. Also, Tullie House will be providing a Tullie On Tour exhibition on Thursday 18 May between 10am and 1pm.
CHoC has been providing physical health checks on a Monday and we now have Social Prescribers on a Wednesday to provide extra support.
New plan for The Wave in Maryport
Our Executive has reluctantly decided to shelve plans for a swimming pool in Maryport as operational costs have spiralled to unaffordable levels.
There have been major concerns about the cost of building a pool at The Wave Centre for some time as construction costs rose dramatically and energy prices also increased. At a meeting this week [Tuesday 25 April 2023], councillors said they were left with no option but to come up with a Plan B as they were warned potential subsidies for the building could reach half a million pounds per year.
Meetings will now take place with the community to design a new attraction which will both benefit the local residents and appeal to the town’s visitors too. The majority of the money for the swimming pool was coming from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
Run The Edge
Places are filling up, but there’s still time to sign up to Run The Edge - our running festival at the picturesque south Copeland coast.
