Cumberland Coronation celebrations
With only weeks to go until The King and Queen’s Coronation, we have announced our plans for public screenings of the historic events.
The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla will take place on Saturday 6 May, followed by a televised pop concert on Sunday 7 May.
Both events will be shown live in two venues within the Cumberland area - Carlisle’s Victoria Park (part of Bitts Park) and Workington Leisure Centre’s big screen. All events are free to attend.

Cultural strategy launches
A strategy to shape the future of the arts across parts of Cumberland has been launched this week.
Developed with the support of more than 100 partners, the Cultural Strategy for West Cumbria was funded by Arts Council England, Sellafield Ltd and the council. It covers the former areas of Copeland and Allerdale, and will sit alongside and complement the current Carlisle Cultural Framework.
The document aims to raise the area’s cultural profile, celebrating it as a great place to visit. It will support funding applications, guide and encourage investment in the cultural and heritage sector, and flag up opportunities for development.

Deadline for free voter ID applications fast approaching
Time to apply for free voter ID ahead of the May elections is running out. The deadline is 5pm on 25 April.
For the first time, voters will need to show photo ID to receive their ballot paper at the local elections on 4 May. Those without an accepted type of ID can apply online for a Voter Authority Certificate, at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or by applying for and submitting a paper form to Cumberland Council’s electoral services team.
Applicants must be registered to vote and will need to provide their date of birth, National Insurance number and a photograph.
Those that have an accepted form of ID already do not need to apply. Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK or EEA drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

'Museum in a box' offered to communities
The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is offering a portable ‘museum in a box’ scheme to help people reminisce and find out more about the history of the area.
The boxes contain museum artefacts and replica objects that people can handle and discuss. They can be taken out into the community and are particularly valuable for older people or those with dementia.
Enforcement team action
On Saturday 15 April, our Enforcement Team ran a joint operation with Cumbria Police, tackling the use of off-road vehicles at Oldside, Workington.
The use of off-road vehicles at Oldside has been an ongoing issue. We would like to remind residents that this activity is prohibited.
The Oldside site is home to a variety of wild animals, such as the protected Blue Butterfly. Driving vehicles on the site is not only against the law, but it also disturbs the habitats of these animals. The site is also regularly used by dog walkers, ramblers and cyclists.
You can report offroad vehicles being used on this site directly to Cumbria Police.
Update on the flood works in Flimby
In order to construct a culvert, we closed the A596 to traffic last week at Flimby. So far, work includes:
- We have installed a fully signed diversion route in place,
- The site compound has been established and preparatory work has begun,
- An existing gas main is being isolated over an existing culvert by Northern Gas Networks,
- The culvert was delivered
If residents or businesses in the area have any questions, please chat to the site staff, contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 373 3736, or email A596.flimby@cumbria.gov.uk
We appreciate your support and patience during these works, and apologise for any inconvenience and disruption.
UK Emergency Alerts service
A reminder there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service at 3pm on Sunday 23 April.
There will be a test message on the home screen of your mobile phone, along with a sound and vibration for up to ten seconds.
As seen in other countries, Emergency Alerts help keep you safe if there is an immediate risk to life by sending an alert direct to your mobile phone. More information: https://www.gov.uk/alerts
There are situations where you may wish to switch off the alerts. Charities helping survivors of domestic violence, for instance, have been doing a campaign advising how to do this if they have a phone hidden from an abuser. You can find out more at https://www.womensaid.org.uk/uk-emergency-alerts
