Director of the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigation Programme, Sandy Lewis outlines MNSI’s ambitions for the final five months of 2024 as the team continues their work to improve maternity safety for mothers, birthing people, and their babies.
While the focus of MNSI will always be patient safety, to achieve this there are many pieces of the puzzle we must get right in order for us to be certain that maternity and neonatal safety and learning remains the priority in England.
With all this in mind, the next five months of 2024 will see us focus on three key areas..

Director of the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigation Programme, Sandy Lewis was recently interviewed by The Guardian about the disproportionate number of black women involved with MNSI investigations.
MNSI figures show that black women are almost twice as likely to be involved with a maternity investigation than their white counterparts. Black mothers are also three times more likely to be subject to an investigation regarding an instance of maternal death and just over twice as likely in cases of intrapartum stillbirths, when the baby dies after labour begins.

On 1st April 2024, six months after the transition to being hosted by the CQC, MNSI made changes to their investigation reports and process. The pilots showed that the new report structure helps to highlight system-wide learning found during the investigation and improve inclusivity. Writing impactful, accessible reports provides MNSI with the greatest opportunity to share the learning from our investigations for the benefit of families, trusts and national bodies to inform safe maternity care.

We’re on the look out for Subject Matter Experts to support us in our investigations and to make maternity care in England safer. We are particularly interested in hearing from consultants working in haematology, pathology and general practice.
