In June 2019 we published our Smiling Matters: Oral Health in Care Homes report, which investigated the state of oral health in care homes.
Our key findings from the report were:
- Nearly half (47%) of care homes were not providing any staff training to support people's daily oral healthcare.
- 17% of care homes visited said they did not assess people's oral health on admission.
- The majority (52%) of the care homes visited had no policy to promote and protect people's oral health.
We made a commitment to follow up on the recommendations we made in the report to see how much progress has been made and what areas need further support.
On future inspections we will be focusing on this issue and hope to see improvements on how oral health is provided for care home residents. Our findings will be published in a follow-up report this year.
We will be launching a new, responsive, version of our website in May. This means the experience for people visiting it on mobiles and tablets will be greatly improved. The services you access through the website such as the ratings display widgets and posters, our email alerts and our provider guidance will all remain available.
We'll provide more information about what this means to you in our next bulletin.
The Care Provider Alliance, comprising of ten national associations which represent independent and voluntary adult social care providers in England, is working with the DHSC on the Fair Cost of Care exercise for home care and care homes. This exercise represents a one-off chance to evidence the cost of care to the government.
You may be aware of Home Care Cost of Care Toolkit produced by LGA/ADAS. They have also commissioned a Care Home Cost of Care Tool which will be free for all councils and providers to use from mid-May. Care providers are invited to book and join a free information event in April or May by clicking here.
If you have any questions about the Fair Cost of Care process, or would like to sign up for regular updates, materials, guidance and FAQs, please email the CPA.
 CQC and system oversight
We are expecting new responsibilities under the Health and Care Bill relating to Local Authority assurance and oversight of Integrated Care Systems. We'd like you to help shape our approach to this new area of regulation. Login or sign-up to our participation platform Citizen Lab to take part in our surveys on developing our approach to system oversight.
