COVID-19 Update

7 August 2020

A regular update for providers and professionals working in healthcare services, sharing the latest guidance on COVID-19 and CQC's approach during this period.

Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) standards

CQC is committed to minimising the use of restraint and other restrictive practices.

From April 2021, we expect to see all services across health and social care use training in restrictive practices that is certified as complying with the Restraint Reduction Network Standards. The standards apply to all training that has a restrictive intervention component and provide a benchmark for training in supporting people who are distressed in education, health and social care settings.

The standards apply across child and adult services, and to all populations, including people using services with mental health conditions, those living with dementia, people with a learning disability and autistic people.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic we acknowledge that the face-to-face training required to comply with these standards is not always possible. However, since April 2020 any training provider that wants to supply training should be certified by the Restraint Reduction Network. We expect providers of services to commission training accordingly.

Help improve statutory notifications to CQC

Statutory notifications submitted to CQC are an important source of information for us and help us better understand the quality of care delivered by providers.

To help improve the quality of information we receive we are working on improvements to the process of submitting statutory notifications.

To support this project we would like to speak to people who work in health and social care providers who have experience of submitting statutory notification forms to CQC.

If you'd like to take part in this work please complete this short survey.

For: Residential drug and alcohol services

Register now for testing and other resources available to residential drug and alcohol services

Two COVID-19 resources are now open to residential drug and alcohol services:

  1. The Capacity Tracker. The Capacity Tracker is an NHS system to enable care homes and others to share their available capacity in real time. It is being used during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to identify pressures and provide support for the health and social care sector, including access to PPE and funding. Register at https://carehomes.necsu.nhs.uk/, then edit and update your service's information.
  2. A one-off whole-home coronavirus (COVID-19) test. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, like other specialist care homes in England, can now apply for one round of test kits for staff and residents. Register at https://request-testing.test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/, using your CQC ID.

If you have not already registered for, and updated, the Capacity Tracker or registered for testing please do so as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the resources on offer.

For: NHS acute trusts

COVID-19 inpatient survey

The NHS patient survey programme provides feedback on the experiences of patients using NHS services.

In July 2020, we published the results of the 2019 adult inpatient survey, and we have identified an opportunity to run a further inpatient survey focusing on the experiences of patients in hospital during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey will focus on a sample of patients admitted during April and May, including those admitted with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 and those admitted for alternate, unrelated reasons.

Results will be provided at a national, regional and Integrated Care System (ICS)/ STP level on how safe, effective, caring and responsive care has been and will be used by us to gain an understanding of people’s experiences of hospital care through the pandemic.

We hope the survey results will be used by providers to inform service planning and response during any subsequent COVID-19 spikes, as well as supporting the ongoing care of those continuing to be admitted with COVID-19.
