Stay up to date with the latest CQC COVID-19 information
We're making changes to the way we work during the COVID-19 outbreak. We've developed a dedicated area on our website so that you can stay up to date with the latest information. Visit our website to find out more. We have also published the answers to frequently asked questions from adult social care providers.
Joint statement from CQC and DHSC on ONS figures
We have issued a joint statement with the Department of Health and Social Care on how we're working with the Office of National Statistics to provide a more detailed and timely picture of the impact of COVID-19 on adult social care, using data on cause of death that we collect from providers.
Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost a loved one, and with the care workers who are working tirelessly to provide care and support during the pandemic. We are committed to using every avenue we can to provide the crucial support the sector needs at this time. Visit our website to read the statement in full.
Provider Information Return requests paused
We have paused the sending out of requests for the adult social care PIR until further notice to relieve the burden on providers.
If you have already received a PIR request, you do not have to return this to us. However, we are reviewing PIRs that we have already received and will continue to review any further PIRs that are submitted. Therefore, if you are in the process of completing a PIR and would like to continue with this and submit it, please do so.
If you have any queries regarding your PIR please contact ascinspections@cqc.org.uk
Data collection during the COVID-19 crisis
Together with the Care Provider Alliance, Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England and NHS Improvement, we have written to all adult social care providers outlining our approach to data collection during the COVID-19 outbreak.
We have worked across our organisations to ensure we are only asking for essential information from you once, and that we establish rapid mechanisms to share information appropriately.
We are asking:
- Residential and nursing homes to complete only the NHS Capacity Tracker as set out in Coronavirus (COVID-19): admission and care of people in care homes
- Homecare providers to complete CQC’s ‘Update CQC on the impact of Covid’ online form (from Monday 13 April). This will be rolled out to Shared Lives services, Extra Care and Supporting Living services soon and we will be in contact with them directly when the service is available to them
- The small number of providers of both homecare and residential and/or nursing homes to complete both data collections.
Read the letter in full for more information.
CQC offices closed - please do not send post
All Care Quality Commission offices are now closed. This means that we have stopped communicating by post, and ask that you do not send post to us. Please use other methods to contact us, details of which are available on our website.
Please do not send completed notification forms, including notifications of deaths, to us by post. These should be emailed to HSCA_notifications@cqc.org.uk.
In the event that we have to issue a formal notice, we will contact the provider by phone to discuss this and to confirm the approach for further contact. Providers are also reminded of their duty of care to people using their services. For those detained under the Mental Health Act, this may mean supporting people to access the internet or make telephone calls if they ask to contact us.
Notification of deaths: indicating where the death occurred
We recently updated the Regulation 16 (death notification) form to enable you to indicate whether the death was a result of coronavirus, either confirmed us suspected.
The form also asks you to indicate where the death occurred – please ensure you complete this section.
The information you provide is helping us develop a more detailed and timely picture of the impact of coronavirus, including a regional view of which areas are being most impacted and may need additional support as a result.
Visit our website to access the updated form.
New guidance for care homes
Public Health England has issued guidance on how to work safely in care homes and a short video guide to putting on and removing PPE.
New guidance on remote verification of expected death (VoED)
The British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) have jointly produced a protocol that can be used by various groups of professionals to verify death remotely with a clinician.
Sharing good practice and innovations
Thank you to those people who have contacted us with their examples of good practice and innovations so far. We've been overwhelmed by the response, and it's inspiring to see so many examples of good practice, creative thinking and innovation.
We are aiming to share as many examples as possible online, but this is taking a little longer than planned due to the volume of responses we've received. We will let you know when you can read about what others have been doing, but in the meantime, please continue to share the great things you are doing! You can send examples to C19innovation@cqc.org.uk
Adult social care recruitment - national campaign
At this time of unprecedented need, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is reactivating a major recruitment drive to inspire people to work in adult social care now and in the future. Campaign advertising will run across TV, radio and online, driving the urgent message ‘We need you now. They need you always’.
Adverts will drive people with the right values to the campaign website, where they can find out more and apply. DHSC has partnered with a number of job boards and some of these organisations will be offering care providers free listings or fund-matching on sponsored jobs for four weeks. Care providers should upload their vacancies to these sites as well as DWP find a job. More information is available on the Every day is different website.
