Tell us your views on our proposals - we want to hear from anyone with an interest.
On 26 January 2018, we published our plans to evolve regulation of independent healthcare services in England.
The proposals in this consultation document represent the evolution of our approach, rather than introducing new methods. It builds on our knowledge of independent healthcare services and our specialist expertise. It will enable a more targeted, responsive and collaborative approach, in line with our strategy. CQC has been given the power to award ratings to some of these services for the first time. This is important for people who use services, as it will provide more transparency about the quality and safety of services provided by the independent healthcare sector.

We published our report 'Mental Health Act – The rise in the use of the MHA to detain people in England' on 23 January 2018. This report looks at causes for the rise in use of the Mental Health Act (MHA) to detain people.
In 2016, we committed to working with local services to gather views on the reasons for the national increase in the use of the MHA, to identify how local services are responding to the changing activity, and to help inform the targeted work planned to bring about improvement. This report presents our findings.
The results of the 2017 maternity survey published 30 January 2017 show that women are reporting a more positive experience of maternity care and treatment.
The survey sought the views of more than 18,000 women who gave birth in February 2017 in services run by 130 NHS trusts across the country. Women were asked about their experience of antenatal care, care during labour and birth and postnatal care.

Old soldier and care home resident Charles Saunders was able to celebrate his 100th birthday in style thanks to the intervention of one of CQC’s Experts by Experience.
MaryAnn Richardson is an Expert by Experience (ExE) from Enham Trust, she first met Charles Saunders in March 2017, when she joined a CQC inspection team as a CQC Expert at a care home in Kent.

We have updated guidance on Regulation 5 - the fit and proper persons requirement for directors.
This is to reflect the changes outlined in our recent ‘next phase of regulation’ consultation. The guidance provides a more detailed explanation of what CQC interprets as serious mismanagement and serious misconduct. It also offers greater clarity about the obligations and responsibilities of those holding director roles.

When sending information to CQC it is very helpful for you to:
- Name the provider(s) your information is about. CQC may not be able to use the information if the location it refers to cannot be identified. Provide, as a minimum, the name and address of the service.
- For information that does not relate to a specific provider, give a short summary of what it covers, for example which type of health and care service, the main topic or subject.
- Outline whether the information raises any serious concerns about the care provided.
Your information will help our inspection teams focus areas of their inspection and identify risk.
