Our update for providers of adult social care services

November 2017

New questions to be asked as part of the current system of provider information collection from December

As part of the changes we are making for our next phase of regulation we will gradually roll out an online process for collecting information from providers from January 2018.

Current system for provider information collection (provider information return)

Until they are invited to begin using the online system, providers will continue to use the current provider information return system.

From 7 December 2017, providers who receive a request to complete a provider information return will be asked a number of updated questions. This is to ensure that the questions we ask are in line with our new inspection framework.

The time period to complete the provider information return will remain at four weeks.

New online system for provider information collection

Until the end of 2017 we will continue to develop the new online system through user research with volunteers. The wider roll out of this online system will start in early 2018.

Providers will gradually be contacted by email to join the new system by registering for an account. We recommend that you ensure the email address we have recorded against your service on our system – you can update your email address if it is not correct. This is so that the invitation is sent to the right email address, and so that we are able to validate your account when you register for the new system.

Providers will have the option to use a single account across their organisation, giving access to view and update information for all their locations. To do this the same email and password login must be used across all locations.

Be a flu fighter – free jabs for adult social care staff

Eligible adult social care staff can now access a free flu vaccine from their GP or local pharmacy.

This week Andrea Sutcliffe wrote to all providers outlining who is eligible and how and where to get a free vaccine.

NHS Employers have developed a free resource for adult social care providers to encourage their staff to get a flu jab.

Tell us what you think about the fees we propose to charge providers in 2018/19

We are currently seeking views on the fees we propose to charge registered providers in 2018/19. Our consultation will remain open until Thursday 18 January.

We are proposing to make changes to the fee scheme for community adult social care providers. For residential social care providers the fee scheme remains unchanged, which means that your fee will remain the same as that for 2017/18, providing your registration remains unchanged.

You can find the consultation document and respond via the online form by visiting the consultation page on our website.

Stoke-on-Trent local system review published

We have published the findings from our review of the local health and social care system in Stoke-on-Trent.

Historically relationships across the local system had been poor with very limited joint working. Although changes in leadership have seen things improve, the report found that the system in Stoke-on-Trent  is still experiencing challenges and is not working in a joined up way, with older people are sometimes experiencing poor care.

Serious concerns uncovered in residential detox clinics

We have published a briefing based on inspections over the last two years of the 68 services in the independent sector that have been identified as providing residential detoxification.

While we found some services that are providing good care and we are beginning to see improvements, we are deeply concerned about how people undergoing residential-based medical detoxification from alcohol or drugs are being cared for in many independent clinics across the country.

In September 2017, CQC was given additional powers to rate independent substance misuse services, and we will launch a public consultation on how we will go about this work next year.

Could you be a CQC inspector?

Are you interested in using your operational management experience to make a difference in adult social care, reporting on how well services meet requirements to be safe, effective, responsive, caring and well led?

We are currently recruiting adult social care inspectors in the Central Region and the South Region. The deadline for applications is Sunday 17 December.
