Professor Ted Baker has been appointed as CQC’s new Chief Inspector of Hospitals and will take over the role from Professor Sir Mike Richards who is to retire at the end of July.

NHS trusts tell their stories of improvement

We published a report on Wednesday 14 June which explores how eight NHS trusts have been able to make improvements to the quality of care they are delivering and to improve their CQC rating.

The report, which was based on interviews with staff, patients and local patient group representatives, reflects on the steps trusts took in order to bring about improvements in their organisations.

Fire safety in registered premises

Sir David Behan has written to providers of care homes, hospices and independent hospitals, as well as their representative bodies, to encourage them to review their fire safety arrangements to ensure they are up to date, understood and applied consistently. You can read Sir David's letter here.

CQC will continue to assess fire safety when we register and inspect providers, focusing on passive and active fire protection and on how fire safety is managed on a day to day basis.

Next Phase of regulation consultation now open

On Monday 12 June 2017 we launched our second consultation on our next phase of regulation. We are seeking views on specific proposals for how we will:

  • improve the structure of registration and clarify our definition of registered providers
  • monitor, inspect and rate new models of care and large or complex providers
  • use our unique knowledge to encourage improvements in the quality of care in local areas
  • regulate primary medical services and adult social care services
  • carry out our role in relation to the fit and proper persons requirement.

We want to keep the elements that we know people value, and to improve what people tell us we can do better. We will continue to work with people who use services, providers, professionals and our other local and national partners to co-produce what we do.

You can respond to this consultation until Tuesday 8 August using this online web form.

CQC Insight dashboard

Later this summer, some NHS trusts will receive an email inviting them to access the online CQC Insight dashboard. The dashboard is a tool that has been developed to support monitoring across a wide number of quality indicators. CQC Insight replaces 'Intelligent Monitoring' and will be updated on a monthly basis to show the most up-do-date information we hold about each trust.

Nurses and surgeons — could you be our specialist advisors?

From July to December 2017 we will be carrying out inspections of independent ophthalmic services which fall in to the following categories:

  • Refractive eye surgery procedures provided by high street ophthalmic clinics
  • Cataract surgery and other ophthalmic surgery procedures

We are currently seeking to recruit nurses and surgeons to carry out the role of Specialist Advisor on the above independent health inspections, who will act as a source of specialist advice.

Specialist Advisors are senior clinicians, currently working in active clinical practice. Successful candidates will have up to date knowledge, skills and experience of independent health eye services and will be available to undertake inspections on an adhoc basis alongside their current role.

Successful candidates will be invited to interview in July. CQC training will also be provided.

To apply, and for further information, please contact the Flexible Workforce Office by calling 0191 233 3591 or contact us via email.
