The call has begun for Coventry and Warwickshire’s finest
talent to take to the stage and impress the judges at this year’s revamped
Godiva Calling.
This year will see a number of changes to the competition
previously known as Godiva Unsigned – although acts will still be required to
have a CV postcode and perform original material, signed bands will also be
given the opportunity to battle it out to play at the festival.
The competition will be split into four genres to ensure
that judging will be more equal – with each subset judged on the same criteria.
Acts will be asked to apply for the competition genre that
best applies to their music from:
- Rock –The Tin at
The Coal Vaults
- Indie/Pop – The
Kasbah
- Singer/Songwriter
– The Albany Club
- Urban/Hip Hop –
Venue TBC
This year there will be two winners from each area. All
eight winning artists will be given the chance to play the Coventry Godiva Festival
on the appropriate stage.
The top four will also be offered recording time and film
time to make a video to help with their promotion.
Tony Skipper, Chair of the Coventry Music Forum, said: “This
year’s competition for local musicians should be the best one yet, with some
key changes to ensure that we represent fairly the diversity of talent in
different types of music across Coventry.
“We’ve found some proven quality venues for the heats
that should attract enthusiastic crowds and support for every act. I look
forward to seeing who will emerge as winners in this year’s contest – I’m sure
that the standard will be high and that it will again be a close competition.”
