This newsletter contains the latest news and messages from Coventry City Council and information about local community groups and partners who are offering local support.
In this issue:
Hello and welcome to this month's bulletin. It is so nice to have longer sunnier days after such wet and dark ones and spend a bit of time outside. This month has seen Coventry City Football Club become Champions and move up to the Premier League for the start of next season. Congratulations Sky Blues!!!
In this bulletin you will find important information about our Carers Strategy and how you can have your say. There are details about the local elections and how you as a carer can support your loved one at the polling station.
We know that caring comes in many different forms. Whether you are supporting someone with a physical disability, dementia, a long-term illness, or an addiction, your role is vital. To reflect the diverse range of caring experiences in our community, we have included information on groups run by Carers Trust, Alzheimer's Society, Myton Hospice and Change Live Grow, Addiction support.
Just to say, watch this space as we will be promoting events and activities for Carers Week in June in our next bulletin.
We continue to develop a local Carers Strategy, which will set out and define our key priorities for the next 5 years. We are keen to hear from carers and will be holding numerous sessions across the city to gain feedback, alongside launching a Carers Strategy engagement page, for people who might want to have their say virtually. On the site will will find key documents and dates and there is a short survey for you to complete.
Local elections are happening in Coventry on Thursday 7 May and every seat on the Council is up for election.
Anyone who has a disability can bring someone with them into the polling station to help them to vote. The person helping you must be aged 18 or over and will need to fill out a form.
A number of accessibility options are available at Polling Stations to help everyone have their say.

This month, our sessions focused on friendships, stress management, and inclusivity. To mark the Easter period, all young carers who attended a group received an Easter egg, which was well received.
During our Focus and Flourish sessions, we began exploring next steps with young people, including discussions around GCSEs, college and sixth form options. We also introduced practical strategies to support stress management, with young carers making their own stress balls and taking part in light, engaging activities such as bubble breathing.
The following week, we celebrated Easter across our groups with a range of activities, including an Easter egg hunt and making chocolate nests. We also delivered a “friendship bingo” activity, which supported young carers to build connections and strengthen peer relationships.
At Templars Primary School in Coventry, we marked National Pet Day by watching The Secret Life of Pets, using the film as a springboard to explore themes such as jealousy, belonging and changing relationships. Across our other groups, young carers took part in activities including biscuit decorating for St George’s Day, as well as bingo and quizzes, creating opportunities for fun, creativity, and social interaction.
Finally, we were pleased to reintroduce our Young Adult Carers session, led by Shannon in her new role as Transition Lead. The session provided a relaxed space for young adult carers to connect, with pizza, games and plenty of positive engagement throughout.

Grapevine and Central England Law Centre invite you to help us respond to the government’s ‘call for evidence’ in its review of the Personal Independence Payment benefit (PIP).
Save the date: Wednesday 6 May, 10am to 12.30pm, Belgrade Theatre.
Known as the Timms Review, the call for evidence will gather feedback and insights from individuals and organisations nationwide to inform whether the health and disability benefit PIP as it stands today is:
- Fair
- Fit for the future
- Still working well in a changing world for disabled people and people with long-term conditions.
The government says the review of PIP aims to help support better health, higher living standards, greater independence and employment where possible.
As Coventry-based organisations working with disadvantaged people, we intend to contribute evidence to the Review with a full and true picture of what life with (and without) PIP is like for disabled people and people with long-term conditions in our city.
To achieve this we are once again hosting a free, open event (no appointment necessary) for people to come and share their experiences of PIP.
The ‘PIP Review Consultation Event’ takes place on Wednesday 6 May from 10am to 12.30pm at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry city centre (CV1 1GS).
Staff from both of our organisations will be there to talk people through the Review, what it is about (easy read link below) and how they can also submit their individual experiences to help inform what happens next with PIP.
Advice on PIP/welfare benefits from Law Centre staff and advocacy advice from Grapevine will also be available on the day.
Sign up for the event so they know you’re coming and please let us know any access requirements here.
The Review’s call for evidence closes on 28 May 2026 at midnight. You can take part online, by post or by email.
Follow this link to the government website for full details of the ‘Timms Review of Personal Independence Payment: Call for Evidence’.
