In this issue:
So the end of 2025 is almost upon us, and it seems to have flown by. The only bonus of this is that I get to enjoy one of my all-time favourite Christmas films again - 'Klaus' - which always makes me happy.
The Christmas holiday is always referred to as being centred around the children, which is fortunately what our focus is all year!
Whilst 2025 has certainly presented a number of challenges across SEN, it's great to see young people involved in some really positive developments in the past few weeks.
The Supported Internship programme at UHCW has recently celebrated its 10 year-anniversary, including hearing from a number of young people who have gained employment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, our 'Strong Voices Coventry' group - with representatives from all of Coventry's secondary specialist schools and colleges - have been informing council SEND leads about what they would consider to be an effective SEND Strategy for Coventry.
These are great examples of young people being actively involved in both their own development and for the wider community. If you know of any inspirational stories, we'd love to include them on our website for Coventry young people.
Just drop us an email at sendnews@coventry.gov.uk
Wishing you all a peaceful holiday.
Chris Firth,
SENDIASS Manager

Celebrating 10 years of Supported Internships
An event to celebrate the 10-year anniversary since the launch of the Changing Futures Together – Supported Internship programme took place at University Hospital in November.
The programme is a collaboration between Coventry City Council and UHCW which helps young people with Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND), between the ages of 16- to 24- years old, transition from education to employment.
The event heard first-hand from interns past and present, their families and work-based mentors – all speaking about the positive impact the programme has had on their lives.
UHCW's Chief People Officer, Donna Griffiths said:
"Over the past 10 years - working together with Coventry City Council, local schools and colleges and our partners at Mitie and ISS, it’s been our pleasure and our privilege to welcome 90 interns into our organisation.
It’s also been great to see those colleagues flourish and grow. Over the last 12 months, 81% of the interns progressed into employment.
Behind every single one of those numbers is a person, and it’s brilliant that we are helping people to change their lives by working together."
Look out for more exciting supported internship news in 2026!

Coventry Alternative Provision
SENDIASS' popular information sessions recently invited the Coventry Alternative Provision (CAP) team to talk about all that can be accessed through the CAP programme.
CAP offers a wide range of short, medium and long-term educational programmes that young people can access through their school or EHCP.
A good example of the type of courses on offer is Wild Earth's Stepping Stones programme. This is a 6-week allotment-based outdoor learning programme supporting improved confidence, resilience, teamwork, and mental health and wellbeing. Nature connection is the platform used to build self-esteem through positive connection with self, others and the environment.
If your young person is struggling to access their education, CAP may be part of the solution!
