Welcome to another edition of your Cycle Coventry Newsletter, with loads of updates for you.
We are delighted that Midland Mencap's popular Parkride programme is returning to Coventry this summer.
The events are being held at parks across Coventry, and offer an opportunity for people try out cycles that may be more suitable to their specific needs, or just get the support they need to improve their riding.
Booking is not required, but you can contact the organisers to ensure a cycle meeting your needs is available on the day.
We are continuing to add dates to our popular child cycle training programme. New sessions are now available at Caludon Castle Sports Centre CV2 5BD on Saturday mornings for the following age groups:
- Ages 2-5 inclusive – 8.15am-9am
- Ages 6-10 inclusive – 9.15am-10am
Sessions for ages 11-16 are very limited, but we expect more dates to be added soon. Please look out for future newsletters.
Our friends at Positive Youth Foundation are running a women-only cycling session at Broad Heath Primary School. This session is for all abilities, rather than being structured and aimed at specific learners. They offer a fun and empowering experience, where women ride together, learn new skills, and support each other.
- Wednesday 28 May – 6pm-8pm at Broad Heath Primary School, CV6 5DP
We have added four more sessions to our Learn to Fix programme at Coventry Cycle Centre, 311 Stoney Stanton Road CV6 5DS.
- Bike Kitchen – 3-5pm Tuesday 10 June
- Bike Kitchen – 5-7pm Thursday 12 June
- Learn to Fix Tyres and Punctures – 3-5pm Tuesday 17 June
- Learn to Fix Tyres and Punctures – 5-7pm Thursday 19 June
Sessions are not available to book just yet, but save the date now if you are interested.
Thanks to funding from Government, we are running a programme of Dr Bike drop-in sessions over the summer.
Our Dr Bike will check over your bike, and make minor repairs there and then on the spot, totally free. More complex repairs may need to be taken to your local bike shop for a chargeable service.
The programme is launched during Bike Week 2025, which this year is 9-15 June, with two events taking place:
- Monday 9 June, 1200-1800 next to Visitor Information Centre, Friargate Boulevard CV1 2FL (opposite Coventry rail station)
- Friday 13 June, 0930-1230 at St Francis Employability CV6 3DQ
The Dr Bike programme then continues over the summer at a number of community venues and events. We would like to thank all those venues that have supported us by accommodating this service.
Our Dr Bike will check over your bike, and make minor repairs there and then on the spot, totally free. More complex repairs may need to be taken to your local bike shop for a chargeable service. There may be a wait at busy times, so come early to avoid disappointment.
No need to book – just drop in!
As part of road changes in the city centre, many one-way streets in the city centre now operate two-way for cycles. This is to make it easier to cycle across the city centre. These streets are:
- Bayley Lane (St Mary Street to Priory Street)
- Chapel Street
- Greyfriars Lane
- Lamb Street
- Little Park Street (Salt Lane to St Johns Street)
- Manor Road
- Salt Lane
- St Patricks Road
- Well Street
The existing contraflow on Priory Street remains in place, but all other one-way streets in the city centre remain one-way for all road traffic including cycles.
Signs at the start and end of the contraflow advise road users that it is two-way for cycles, and logos are also painted on the road at regular intervals.
Not all signage and lining is complete yet, so please be careful when using these streets. Be aware that pedestrians and drivers may not be used to cyclists travelling the other way, so exercise caution around other road users at all times.
This is the second wave of cycle contraflows recently introduced in the city, after Moor Street, Berkeley Road South and Providence Street as part of Earlsdon Liveable Neighbourhood.
Historic cycle contraflows are also in place on certain sections of the Dunchurch Highway and Fletchamstead Highway service roads, and Priory Street as already noted above.
