Dementia Hero - Carol's Story
Dementia Week took place in May and we would like to look back on the story of an inspirational lady who lived and received care and support in Coventry, whose advocacy for research led to a breakthrough on one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease.
Carol advocated for research into how genetics may be a cause for people developing Alzheimer's disease after her father and four of his siblings were diagnosed with Dementia. Research took place with Carol's family and Carol was the first to volunteer for this type of research. This research is how the 'Amyloid' protein was discovered, and the 'Amyloid Hypothesis' on how Alzheimer's disease is caused, was developed.
Although in most cases Alzheimer's is not directly inherited, in some uncommon cases, Alzheimer's disease can be directly inherited. This was a major breakthrough in Alzheimer's research thanks to Carol and her family.
Later in her life, Carol received a dementia diagnosis herself and was supported at Abbey Park Nursing Home. Carol's husband Stuart who also advocated for raising awareness of dementia, said: "I was on BBC CWR this morning and mentioned the Dementia Hub. I mentioned the excellent care/nursing home who supported us with regular periods of respite since the pandemic (all of you at Abbey Park). Your care gave me three extra years with Carol".
Carol recently had a room named in her honour at the Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub as part of their 'Recognising a Dementia Hero' scheme. Carol used the Maymorn Day Centre (now the Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub) herself, which makes this honour even more special.
Carol and Stuart were also honoured by the Alzheimer's society by being offered the position of Vice-Presidents due to their amazing contributions to dementia research. They were handed the award by the CEO of the Alzheimer's society.
Thank you to Stuart for allowing us to share his and Carol's story. To hear more about their story, the BBC aired 'The Jennings vs Alzheimer's' on BBC 2, Monday 13 May at 9pm and it is available on BBC iPlayer.

The Commissioning Team would like to say a big thank you to all who took the time to attend the third Community Alternatives Market Stall Event.
It was great to see a range of ASC practitioners, health colleagues, and providers across the care market attending the event. Stall holders included a range of organisations such as Act on Energy, Change Grow Live, Carers Trust, Age UK, Penderels Trust, Tulia, Voluntary Action Coventry, and many more!
This event enabled networking for various organisations in the community who support adults to enable collaborative working and effective signposting moving forwards. This helps to holistically support adults in Coventry with care and support needs.
If you missed this event do not worry as it is held twice a year by the Commissioning Team and you can look out for it in this bulletin or the ASC Commissioning Website's events calendar. Thank you to the stall holders and those who contributed to the success of this event.
