Please read through this bulletin for useful dates, events and information relevant throughout the month of May.
Please note, this survey is mandatory for all Coventry City Council commissioned providers as part of the return to central government to comply with the grant conditions of the Market Sustainability and Improvement Fund (MSIF).
Fill in the survey.
The Market Sustainability and Improvement Fund (MSIF or ‘the fund’) was announced at the autumn statement in November 2022. The primary purpose of the fund in 2024 to 2025 is to support local authorities to maintain improvements made from 2023 to 2024 within the fund target areas. This funding is also expected to support local authorities to seek further improvements to adult social care services in their area, in particular to build capacity and improve market sustainability.
The government considers that 3 vital target areas of improvement underpin the overarching objective of building capacity and improving market sustainability. These are:
- increasing fee rates paid to adult social care providers in local areas
- increasing adult social care workforce capacity and retention
- reducing adult social care waiting times
As you will already be aware, Coventry City Council have and continue to use MSIF funding to uplift all commissioned fee rates for adult social care providers. We are now required to gather baseline data from commissioned providers regarding recruitment and retention to submit to the Department of Health and Social Care, as to comply with the MSIF grant conditions. This is a repeat of the data previously requested in May 2023 to understand the impact of this funding to recruitment and retention in the city over the last 12 months.
In order to comply with grant conditions we request each provider / home to complete the below data return by the 8 May 2024. Where the home or service is part of wider organisation, please complete one return for all Coventry services.
Please only provide data in respect of the period 1 April 2024 - 30 April 2024 regarding:
- Number of care workers who have joined/left the service
- Number of managers who have joined/left the service
- Number of 'other' workers who have joined/left the service (by 'other' we mean any position not captured under a direct care or manager role, e.g. domestic worker, cook etc.)
Please note, no provider identifiable information will be submitted to the Department of Health and Social Care; information will only be submitted on a collective basis. Should you have any questions regarding this survey please contact Chloe.Elliott@coventry.gov.uk. Full information on the MSIF and its requirements can be found on the government website.
Please see key contact information and numbers over the May bank holiday period for Coventry Adult Social Care:

A new service has been launched aiming to provide Coventry residents with a high-quality cost-effective option when choosing their funeral arrangements.
The ambition at Coventry Funeral Service is to keep things simple by streamlining the funeral arrangement process with fully inclusive funeral packages, clear pricing and providing the necessary information for people to make the best decision for their loved one.
The issue of costs and bereavement poverty is well known, not just in Coventry but right across the UK and this is a key driver behind why the service is being launched.
A recent national report into funeral costs and picked up by national media, highlighted the average cost of a basic funeral is now around £4,100. This is a 4.7% increase in a year and reflects a staggering 126% increase in the last 20 years.
The report also showed the ‘average total cost of dying’ – which includes burial or cremation fees, funeral director’s costs, a coffin, one funeral vehicle and additional admin/estate fees had reached £9,658.
Another added benefit is that Coventry City Council already runs a crematorium in the city, so is well-versed and extremely knowledgeable in this funeral sector, including funeral industry qualified, experienced staff.
The website carries all the key information on how to get in touch, the range of options available, charges and a standardised price list in addition to a step-by-step guide on what do when somebody dies.
People can also contact the Team at info@coventryfuneralservice.co.uk or by calling 024 7697 7702.

Top 25 prize winner - Brandon House!
Congratulations to Brandon House Nursing Home, who won a Lenovo HD 10.1" Tablet in a random name selection prize draw for 'Top 25' questionnaire submissions.
Top 25 is an exploration of activities and improving wellbeing. Earlier in the year, a survey was sent out from the Commissioning Team to residential ASC providers to tell us what activities residents would love to do if there were no barriers.
The Top 25 activities questionnaire was completed by 186 residents of Coventry Adult Social Care Services. We received a total of 486 activities! This has provided great insight into the activities that residents would like to do if there were no barriers. The next steps will be to hold workshops to explore how to make the 'top 25' themes of activities submitted a possibility.
On Thursday 18 April, the Commissioning Team visited Brandon House Nursing Home to hand over the grand prize. We met with manager Sheryl Davis, Wellbeing Co-Ordinator Simon Day, and resident ambassador Gail to discuss activities that residents get up to in the home.
The Commissioning Team were blown away by the wonderful range of activities on offer at Brandon House and the level of personalised care that staff deliver to residents. Wellbeing Co-Ordinator Simon Day told us how the residents of Brandon House love animals so much that they have gone on day trips to farms and had a variety of animals visit the home, from a parrot to goats!
Brandon House go above and beyond to provide meaningful activities to residents and the positive atmosphere in the home is immediately felt when you step foot through the door. Well done to Brandon House Nursing Home on winning the prize Lenovo Tablet. Also, thank you to the Council's Digital Services Team for donating the prize for the Top 25 activities engagement questionnaire.

Shared Lives family are going to Wembley!
A family that has come together as part of a Council Adult Social Care scheme is putting the flags out as they gear up for this weekend’s FA Cup outing against Man Utd.
Rob, Bernie, Stephen, and Kerry have been brought together by the Coventry Shared Lives Scheme, which enables adults to live together in a family home where care and support are provided in a loving environment.
Stephen and Kerry live with Bernie and Rob and have developed a caring relationship for several years. Stephen and Rob are big Coventry City fans and have season tickets - going to every game whenever they can.
Stephen, who will also celebrate his 54th birthday on Monday, told us how much he is looking forward to Sunday. He said: “It’ll be 2-1 to Coventry, Simms and Haji Wright will score. Cov are going to win.” He also expressed excitement about getting to wave at Coventry City manager Mark Robins as the players walk out – something he always does whenever the team run out onto the pitch.
Rob added: “I’ve been a massive Sky Blues fan for years and going with Stephen has been great. It is such a perfect way for him to connect with more people. We love it and can’t wait for Sunday.”
Bernie told us how important the Shared Lives scheme is; “It’s a good scheme because you can make a difference that can change lives by giving people meaningful opportunities. You can enhance skills and you can live together as a family. Kerry helps in the kitchen, we cook together, and Stephen helps set the table. Kerry calls us a good team - we’re a good team together. It’s especially nice for Stephen to go to Wembley.”
Liane Wood, Shared Live Officer at the Council, said: “It’s wonderful to work on Shared Lives and Stephen, Kerry, Rob and Bernie are such a lovely group to work with. As a Sky Blues' fan I’m so excited for them all.”

The Knowles - Sharing Easter Joy
The Knowles Care Home recently caught the attention of the Coventry Observer for their community outreach work to spread Easter joy to their local community.
Residents from the Knowles Care Home generously donated a large amount of Easter eggs to Coventry Foodbank to help make sure that nobody misses out on this tasty tradition!
Service Owner Abbas Nurmohamed told us "this activity was carried out in line with our ethos of ensuring our residents lead rich and fulfilling lives with a sense of purpose".
The Knowles have multiple community outreach events in the works for this year, we can't wait to see what they do next - well done to the Knowles!
