July Edition 2023

Welcome to the first Climate Change newsletter, filled with news updates, event details and information about how you can join us in creating a greener, healthier, and more prosperous city.
Since we launched Coventry’s draft Climate Change Strategy, lots of local people, partners and businesses have taken the time to comment – and that’s vital because it’s important that you help us shape and deliver the strategy. We will publish a report with a summary of your feedback, which will feed into the final Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan later in the year.
In the meantime, there is lots going on in our effort to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change. We are certainly a city leading the way with innovative projects like Coventry Very Light Rail set to change the way people move around, our growing network of segregated cycle lanes and of course we will be the UK’s first all-electric bus city.
But there is always more to do. Climate change affects the future of every city and every person. It is an issue that affects the region, the country – and the world.
So, I hope you find it useful to find out more about what we are doing here in Coventry.
Thank you.

Margot James Chair of The Independent Climate Change Board
Following the launch of the draft Climate Change Strategy we have been collecting feedback from residents, businesses, and organisations across the city. As part of this the Climate Change team delivered a series of engagement sessions across the city at libraries, shopping centres, events, special interest groups and schools. We also hosted online webinars and conducted a survey which closed on 7 July.
Thank you to everyone that took part at our engagement sessions survey and to those who left comments and pledges at our events. The next steps will be to produce a consultation feedback report which will be published later this summer. Feedback will also be used to update the draft Climate Change Strategy to reflect the views of the city.
We will also be developing our engagement programme to help raise awareness of issues and provide opportunities for our residents and businesses to get involved in taking action on climate change.
For the first time, Godiva Festival applied for the ‘A Greener Future’ environmental accreditation (formerly known as A Greener Festival). This prestigious accreditation evaluates events on a range of sustainability themes, including waste and recycling, transport, food and beverage, social value, biodiversity impact, energy and power, water use and sustainable procurement.
A consultation is underway to review Coventry’s Local Plan policies.
The adopted Local Plan should be reviewed every five years to see if our policies are up-to-date or need adjusting to reflect changes to national policy or other matters. This is what the Council is now doing.
We need to consider the review of the Plan in light of changes to national government planning policy and the Council’s priorities - including the One Coventry Plan and the emerging Climate Change Strategy.
We are also looking at other issues such as health, housing, employment, retail, open space, transport, climate change, green space infrastructure, and much more.
We want your thoughts to inform the review process. The consultation will run until Tuesday 12 September.
- We're set to be the UK’s first Electric Bus City
- Our segregated cycleways make safer spaces for cyclists to travel around the city!
- By recycling more at home, we can protect our environment, and create a healthier city for future generations
- We're planting more trees in parks, green spaces and on roadsides
- The brand new ‘Material Recycling Facility’ opens this month. The Facility, which is located on the London Road, will transform the way we deal with your recycling. Watch this short clip with Cllr Jim O’Boyle and Cllr Hetherton to find out more.
