As part of Carers Week 2023 Coventry City Council will be hosting an Adult Social Care Open Day at Bethel Church, CV1 3HB on Tuesday 6 June 10am-2pm.
This will be an opportunity for individuals to come and speak to the teams and learn more about support options available through adult social care. We will be joined by a number of social care providers and organisations, including Carers Trust Heart of England, who will be able to give an overview of the range of support available for individuals and carers in Coventry.
Please do advertise the day in your schemes and encourage individuals to come along and join us for a cup of tea and a chat to find out more!
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.
The campaign is brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together to provide support for carers, run activities, highlight the vital role carers play in our communities and draw attention to just how important caring is.
To support Carers Week in Coventry, a number of events are taking place including our Adult Social Care Open Day on 6 June at Bethel Church which will have a care'rs focus, and the week of events facilitated by Carers Trust in the below schedule. We will also be lighting up the city blue for the week to show our support
We encourage as many people as possible to take part in the activities and celebrate Carers Week in their own way.
Every year Coventry City Council produces a report which describes what the Adult Social Care service is doing to help improve the lives of vulnerable people and how well as a service it is performing along with areas where we are seeking to improve further. This report is usually referred to as the ‘Local Account’ but is also referred to as the ‘Annual Report’ for Adult Social Care.
We are looking for providers to send in success stories, examples of where they have gone above and beyond for individuals, and significant achievements. These must have taken place over the 2022/23 financial year to feature in the account. Please send your stories to Chloe.Elliott@coventry.gov.uk by the end of June!
Have a read through our last local account on our website.
Thank you all for your support with the Spring COVID-19 vaccination programme so far. We have visited over 50% of our homes, with the remainder to be vaccinated by 30 May. If you have not been contacted by your vaccination provider, and are a provider of OACH (Older Adults Care Home) or have residents over the age of 75 or who are immunosuppressed, please contact cwp-tr.cwvoc@nhs.net to let us know as soon as possible so we can support arranging a visit.
For the teams that are coming out to you, we would be grateful with your support in identifying patients and escorting them to their vaccination. This makes the process more efficient, and mitigates any risk around a vaccination record being made against the wrong patient.
Our free one-day, face to face workshop will help you understand market trends in your area and how commissioners are shaping the local market. It will help you assess where you are now with workforce planning and give you the tools you need to develop an effective staff plan for your service.
The workshop is facilitated by experts with real-life experience of workforce planning in your area. They will guide you in how to anticipate and respond to the changing needs of the local market and identify what staff you need to future-proof your business.
Health Education England have invested in a series of workshops to enable adult social care employers in the Midlands to access them free of charge. Places are limited, so make sure you don’t miss out.
Workshops are being offered in each of the 11 Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) established in the Midlands. You will need to register for the workshop that is based in the area where you are operating your service (if you cover multiple areas, we recommend you attend the workshop in the area where you deliver the most services).
You will learn:
- the principles of workforce planning
- the latest plans for your local care market – provided by the commissioners leading these plans
- how your Adult Social Care Workforce Data Set can help
- how to use Skills for Care’s practical workforce planning tools and resources to help you write a detailed action plan for what you need to do next.
Who’s it for?
CEOs, Directors, Nominated Individuals, Registered Managers, HR Specialists - or anyone working in the adult social care sector who has a responsibility for ensuring that the right services are being delivered with the right number of staff.

As part of Skills for Care’s registered manager membership, we have an exclusive opportunity for members to take part in an open version of the Compassionate Leadership Footprint programme, delivered by Affina Organisational Development.
Leading compassionately and working collaboratively continue to be increasingly important in the changing context of social care reform. Over four virtual half-day sessions this autumn, participants will be able to explore the evidence around compassionate leadership, and further develop their knowledge and practice. More information: Skills for Care - Support for Leaders
Registered managers who do not have registered manager membership at Skills for Care can find out more about this (it works out at only 67 pence a week) : Skills for Care website
Skills for Care has worked with social care experts at University of York to create ‘Curious about Care’, a free evidence-based tool that can be used as part of the recruitment process. It allows care providers to explore different scenarios with a candidate to better understand their values, helping to assess if they are a good fit for the organisation.
Whether new-to-post or an experienced nominated individual, or whether it is held as a dual role as a registered manager as well, Skills for Care’s new Nominated individual resource considers key aspects of the role and shares top tips: Skills for Care Nominated Individuals
If you are not signed up to the Skills For Care workforce data set we would strongly urge you to do so. Please follow the links below which explain the benefits of participating and give details of a webinar demonstrating how the system works.
Virtual Webinar on ASC WDS on 7 June 10-10:45am to show providers how it works.
Coventry City Council is hosting a community fun day which is taking place on Friday 2 June during half-term.
The activities are taking place across two sites: Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre between 11am & 2pm and Bell Green library between 10am & 3pm.
The events are free and will include lots of fun activities for all ages, information about health, wellbeing and employment.
There will also be a BBQ and bouncy castle at the Moat House site and refreshments at Bell Green Library.
Please do promote this event or share the information with other organisations and residents.
You may already be aware of our Adult Social Care Real Time Survey, designed to allow service users to give feedback on the support they have received from the Council for example, at contact, reviews and assessments. This feedback is reviewed regularly and used to improve our service moving forward.
This is a rolling survey with no cut-off date; individuals can respond whenever they have ASC involvement. We would be grateful for your support in promoting the survey and assist individuals who may require support to complete this.
We would greatly appreciate your support in promoting and assisting this. Please get in touch should you have any questions.

In continuation of our recruitment and retention drive for adult social care, we are actively looking for providers who are hoping to hire additional staff, particularly recruits who are just starting their career journey in adult social care. We are putting together support for citizens with disabilities who have the values and experiences to be assets to the adult social care workforce, but are often overlooked due to stereotypes or misconceptions.
We are offering support and preparation to this cohort of potential employees to prepare them for a role within our wonderful adult social care sector. We will also be providing assistance to you, the provider, to support with the implementation of reasonable adjustments in addition to wellbeing support and funding information.
Following these support and preparation sessions, we can introduce these aspiring candidates to you at one of our exciting recruitment events, specifically for yourselves and this cohort of candidates. These events are proven to be successful and are a great opportunity to meet candidates face-to-face outside of the standard interview setting.
We highly encourage all Coventry providers to register interest with us to get involved. Please contact Mae.Fletcher@coventry.gov.uk to register interest and to find out more.
Message from The Job Shop:
Are you looking to find a stress free way of recruiting to your vacancies?
Here at the Job Shop we host a monthly Care Event, that occurs on the first Wednesday of every month 11:00 – 13:00, to link Coventry residents with local employers. This is an invaluable opportunity which would allow you to meet prospective candidates face to face, before they start the application process, as well as understanding the skills, knowledge and experience of those interested in working within the sector.
These have been hugely successful in the past and many of our customers are thrilled to now be in sustainable employment through our Care Event.
As the Summer months are approaching, we are hoping to have bigger and better Care Events, and we invite you to join us!
If you are small to medium enterprise employing 250 people or less there may also be funding available to support the training of a new recruit. The candidate needs to be registered on our Your Vision Your Future programme, 16-29 not currently in employment, education and training and living in the CV1 – CV6 area of Coventry
If you are interested in being a part of our next event or would like more information regarding the funding available , please get in contact with us via email, at lindsey.hines@coventry.gov.uk

Call for evidence from the Department of Health and Social Care:
The Department of Health and Social Care has launched an open consultation to shape the Care Workforce Pathway for adult social care.
This call for evidence will inform the development of a new care workforce pathway for adult social care (referred to as ‘the pathway’). Over the coming months, we will work with people who work in and draw on adult social care, to co-develop a pathway which sets out the skills, knowledge and behaviours that people working in adult social care need to deliver high-quality, personalised, compassionate care and support.
We would like your views on the pathway, including what it should include, how it should be set out and how we can support people working in care, and social care employers, to use it, so that care workers can develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours to become experts in their field or progress into new roles.
Your views will shape the development of the pathway, the first part of which will focus on staff in direct care roles. We plan to publish this in autumn 2023. We will provide more information on our publication plans in due course.
This call for evidence will run for 8 weeks and is open to everyone.
You can respond:
- as an individual
- on behalf of someone else
- on behalf of an organisation
The call for evidence closes at 11.45pm on 31 May 2023
We encourage all providers to respond to this call for evidence. To contribute, please complete the online survey on the DHSC website.
For further information about the call for evidence please see the DHSE website
On 11 April, the first quarterly VCSE provider forum of the year took place to enable a constructive and meaningful discussion group for Coventry City Council’s ASC Commissioning team and providers within the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises sector.
Wonderful discussions were had between individuals with services ranging from older peoples support, sensory impairment support, dementia support, citizen advocacy and disability support. Presentations were held by the council on targeted recruitment support into adult social care, in addition to a support offer from the council to provide citizens and providers accessible training on digital skills, including success stories on innovative ways that they have informed vulnerable citizens on online safety in a non-threatening and fun way.
Additionally, the organisations worked together on a plan with the commissioning team on how Coventry City Council can improve on the existing support targeted towards VCSE organisations, such as hosting more in-person events to enable organisations to connect and network with each other.
If you would like to attend the next VCSE provider forum, contact Simon.Veasey@coventry.gov.uk. For additional forums for providers in other sectors, take a look at the events calendar on the new ASC Commissioning website.
Message from the University of Birmingham
The University of Birmingham, along with the University of Bristol, University of Manchester, and Opening Doors, are doing a study on older LGBTQ+ adult social care assessments. We are currently looking for people to participate in our project and take part in an interview. If you are an LGBTQ+ individual over the age or 60, or if you are a carer providing care for an older LGBTQ+ person, we would like to talk to you. The interview will discuss peoples’ experiences of social care assessments and identify how social care can improve supporting LGBTQ+ older people. The topics will include initial contact and perceptions of the service, as well as recommendations for how to support people more effectively. We are keen to involve as many people as possible and would be happy to talk to you about how you could take part. The interview will take place in a location of your choice. You will also receive a £20 voucher as a token of our appreciation for taking part.
In Coventry, the local authority follows the One Coventry Plan to ensure the continuous strengthening of Coventry and support to its citizens. Part of the One Coventry Plan is the Green Futures Agenda.
The One Coventry Plan asks residents and communities to help us deliver this Green Futures plan by:
- Being aware of personal carbon footprint and consider energy efficiency options to reduce this
- Reusing and recycling more
- Taking pride in our city by not dropping litter, fly tipping or posting and cleaning up after your dog
- Using greener travel options - walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing and low emission vehicles
If we are successful, the difference you can expect to see is:
- Improved air quality
- Lower carbon emissions 16
- Increased use of zero carbon transport, active travel, and public transport
- Increase in the numbers employed and the commercial success of businesses which seize the opportunities climate change presents
- Improvements in energy efficiency and use of zero carbon technologies
- Increased biodiversity and areas of natural vegetation and open space
- Reduced incidence of floods and levels of flood damage as a consequence of climatic effects
- Improved health and wellbeing for the population and a reduction in the health inequalities
- Reductions in the levels of waste and greater levels of re-use and recycling
These are great ways for individual citizens to practice Green Future, but what about our adult social care providers? We greatly encourage our providers to think about ways to help be more environmentally pro-active. We have listed some examples for you below:
- Planting pollinator plants and wildflower seeds – this could be a particularly fun activity for residential care providers’ residents. This supports biodiversity and encourages wildlife such as bees and butterflies who would be very grateful for your efforts!
- Solar Energy – We are seeing large rises in energy bills which increase the costs of running a service. Switching to solar power is a way to be more sustainable and it saves a lot of money!
- Cycle to work scheme – Managers could encourage staff who have shorter travel distances to cycle to work or walk instead of car travel to reduce exhaust emissions and their carbon footprint.
- Making more green space – rooftop gardens and plant/living walls are becoming very popular amongst different services, particularly in more built-up areas. This can help to improve air quality, maximise space and make a building more appealing.
