Our year as City of Culture is finally here

The Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins, has hailed the launch of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture as ‘the fresh start that the city and country needs’.

The year officially began on the 15 May, and thousands of tickets are now on sale for a range of exciting events over the coming months.

Timeless Words Made New - George Eliot and Coolie

Coventry launched its year as UK City of Culture with the release of a George Eliot-inspired film, featuring a new track by Coolie.

The film takes inspiration from the words of George Eliot, who lived in the city, setting her words to a new music track specially created for the film by one of the city’s hottest talents, Coolie. 

It was released at 20:21 on Saturday 15 May, reflecting the year, on the City of Culture website

Assembly will run the Coventry UK City of Culture’s Assembly Festival Garden from July-October 2021

Coventry UK City of Culture has announced that Assembly Festival will be setting up, programming and running a substantial new hub venue in the city centre, Assembly Festival Garden.

The site will be a centrepiece for the city’s year of cultural celebrations and will run from 1 July to mid-October 2021.

Coventry Cathedral to display the Lampedusa cross to mark the start of Coventry UK City of Culture

On Saturday 22 May to Sunday 23 May, Coventry Cathedral will display the Lampedusa cross as part of the British Museum Spotlight Loan: Crossings: community and refuge tour.

Coventry City Council appoint new Cabinet Member for Education and Skills

A Coventry University Research Fellow with a passion for learning has become Coventry City Council’s new Cabinet Member for Education and Skills.

Councillor Dr Kindy Sandhu was formally appointed to the position earlier today at Coventry City Council’s Annual General Meeting.

CSW COVID Business Pledge

As England takes the next step on the roadmap out of lockdown, councils are urging businesses to sign up to their business pledge to show they’re doing the right things to be COVID safe.

The Business Pledge was launched so that all businesses across the sub-region, including shops, factories, offices and hospitality, could reassure staff and customers that businesses and venues are operating in a COVID-secure manner.

A leading finance provider, business support organisations, local authorities and district and borough councils in Coventry and Warwickshire have joined together to offer support to businesses.

Upper Precinct updates

Final stone laid in restoration of city walls

The final stone has been laid in the major restoration of the ancient walls that protected Coventry’s Carthusian Monastery as part of a multi-million-pound new visitor attraction.

Telegraph Hotel is given the civic seal of approval as it officially opens its doors

Coventry’s Telegraph Hotel has been given the civic seal of approval as it opened its doors to guests for the first time.

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Ann Lucas, was given the honour of cutting the ribbon and formally heralding in a new era for the former Coventry Telegraph offices.

The West Midlands Fire Service have release their new policy 'Our Plan', which forms part of their three-year rolling strategy for making the West Midlands Safer, Stronger and Healthier.

Coventry residents are being invited to let the new Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, know their policing priorities.

People have until 10 June to have their say on what matters to them before the new West Midlands Police and Crime plan is created.

New and improved gallery spaces at Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

Visitors to a Coventry gallery have been enjoying its new £1.2 million refurbishment for the first time after completion by a leading local developer.

Coventry-based Deeley Construction completed the improvement works at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in April, while it was still closed to the public due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Coventry netball umpire Sarah Scanlon is one of 14 Hometown Heroes – inspiring local champions of community sport in the West Midlands – celebrated by the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Sports Fest to return in summer 2021

The annual sporting event, Sports Fest is returning for the summer of 2021.

The six-day event will be back in Broadgate from Tuesday 27 July – Sunday 1 August.
