The Leader of Coventry City Council today joined a region-wide call for people not to drop their guard as the COVID-19 vaccine programme continues across the region.
Case rates remain high in the West Midlands and hospitals are under huge pressure, with the latest official figures showing that almost 40,000 people are currently in hospital with coronavirus across the UK.
The vaccine roll-out is one cause for optimism, but echoing the fears from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), Cllr George Duggins joined the leaders of Birmingham, Sandwell, Solihull, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton councils in urging people to stick to the rules around social distancing and hygiene.
The University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire is set to be granted Freedom of Entry to the City of Coventry.
The honour was proposed in Full Council by Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins, who said it was in recognition of the ‘incredible work’ of NHS staff at the hospital and across the city.
The proposal will have to be formally agreed by Full Council at a future meeting. Once agreed, hospital representatives will be invited to a presentation and there could then be a parade to allow the city to show its thanks.
A digital record of thanks has been created so that Coventry residents can send their gratitude to all of those who are on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus.
The collection will allow people to share their support for all those who are putting themselves at risk to save lives, protect others and keep critical services running.
It will create a digital record of the gratitude the people of Coventry have for those helping all of us to defeat coronavirus, including those who have tragically lost their lives in doing so.

The Council is inviting applications for its project grants programme that support the arts and cultural activity in Coventry. The scheme sets out to offer more Coventry residents the opportunity to participate in the cultural life of the city.
Organisations are invited to apply with their ideas. The fund has a total value of £75,000 and grants ranging from £5,000 to £12,000 will be awarded. Projects must engage the public with arts and culture activities and enable all members of the community to access and participate in culture. This can be through a variety of means including online and digital activity.
Plans for a striking new visitor information pod to be installed at Coventry Railway Station have been submitted to Coventry City Council’s Planning Committee.
If approved, the plans will see the construction of a pod that will serve visitors and local residents alike, providing information on featured events, historical points of interest, restaurants, bars and any local organisations with a message to share.
