The headline around assessment at KS1 and KS1 for summer 2021
The key section of this for us in primary schools is:
For primary assessments, key stage 1 tests in English reading and mathematics, and the English grammar, punctuation and spelling tests at key stage 1 and 2 will be removed for one year, in recognition of the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Schools can take a flexible approach to the administration of the key stage 2 tests and phonics screening check, by extending the original timetable by a week, until 26 May and 25 June, respectively.
Although primary performance data will not be published, teacher assessment in English reading, writing and mathematics at key stage 1, and all other assessments at key stage 2, will remain. These measures will help to understand pupils’ lost time in education and support those that need it most, providing vital information to parents and assisting with pupils’ transition to secondary school.
The Assessment and Reporting Arrangements documents for all three key stages and the Teacher Assessment Guidance for key stages one and two have also been published today, along with details around access arrangements and timetable variations.
I will provide a full summary of the changes in these documents early next week and we will look to put on the rescheduled virtual briefings early in January. I will provide dates for these as soon as possible.
In the meantime, please get in touch if you have any questions.

Positive Youth Foundation have put together an excellent two minute video (with the support of the Council Communications team) called “Own your space”. This raises awareness of the importance of COVID-19 prevention measures in our everyday lives and interactions i.e. Hands, Face, Space in a relatable and creative way. Please share with your school community as appropriate (e.g. secondary age and upper end of primary).
Coventry Transport Museum and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum has launched its virtual schools membership scheme. Included are virtual workshops, assemblies, CPD events, and resource kits that can be sent direct to your school.
If you are interested in this project, please contact PIPA@warwick.ac.uk. The information shared is for headteachers, please do not share wider with parents at this point.
