As a result, this newsletter contains the latest news and messages from Coventry City Council, public health guidance, national advice around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and information about local community groups and partners who are offering local support.

Joint call from city organisations to help beat COVID

Public organisations across Coventry have joined forces to call on people and businesses of the city to do all they can to fight coronavirus and reverse the continuing rise in cases.

New COVID-19 test site to open in Coventry

A fourth COVID-19 test site will open its doors on Monday 26 October, providing additional testing capacity for the city.

Like the three current test sites, the new facility on Whitefriars Car Park, Whitefriars Lane, in the city centre, will offer pre-booked appointments only.

But it will be the second test centre, along with the on Broad Street, Foleshill, that will offer appointments for people to arrive on foot. The two other facilities – at Moat Street car park in the city centre and the Ricoh Arena – are for drive-through appointments.

Own Your Space – a COVID-19 health message for young people by young people

Teenagers from across the city have created a video to stress the importance of young people following COVID-19 safety messages.

The two-minute digital creation is the result of a partnership between the Positive Youth Foundation and the Council.It was created in response to feedback that many teenagers felt that national advice was often too confusing to understand.

Changes to the Household Waste Recycling Centre announced

The Council will be making the current booking system at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (tip) on London Road permanent. This change has been made following positive feedback from residents.

Currently, residents are asked to book a slot by booking online or by calling 0808 5834333.

Coventry celebrates as 5 parks win Green Flag Award

This week, parks and green spaces across the country have been raising their Green Flag Award with pride in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep.

Among them were five parks in Coventry which were raising a Green Flag Award for the 9th year running – the War Memorial Park, Coombe Country Park, Longford Park, Allesley Park and Caludon Castle park.

Court action on hold but don’t let debts add up

The Council is teaming up with advice agencies to encourage people not to ignore council tax debts whilst court action is currently on hold.

Court proceedings are due to commence again from 19 October and people are encouraged to seek help before incurring further costs.

Concerns that people are delaying addressing debts, whilst enforcement activity has been put on hold due to COVID, are being highlighted and people are being encouraged not to put off seeking debt advice.

New video highlights where to go to report hate crime

A video, produced in Coventry by local communities, is highlighting the thoughts and feelings of victims of hate crime; and providing details of how people, who experience or witness hate crime, can report it.

The video, titled ‘Together we can stop hate crime’, tells the experiences of people from different communities in the city.

Each person’s story explains the cruelty of hate crime which is defined by a hostility or prejudice towards someone on the basis of either their race, religion, disability, or as a result of homophobia or transphobia.

MiFriendly Cities project amongst 10 best in its field

We are excited to share that the MiFriendly Cities project has been chosen as a finalist in The Innovation in Politics Awards 2020

MiFriendly Cities, an 11-partner commitment to developing the West Midlands as a Migrant Friendly region, was selected as an outstanding example of political innovation in Europe. The decision was made by 1058 jurors from 47 countries. Out of the 398 entries, MiFriendly Cities ranks amongst the 10 best in its field, and amongst the 90 best in Europe.

Queen’s Honour for Peter

The Council’s Peter Barnett has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Peter, Lead Officer, Refugee Resettlement, has been honoured for Services to Refugees in Coventry.

The Queen's Birthday Honours List rewards and highlights good works by citizens of Commonwealth countries.

National Adoption Week continues to break down the myths surrounding adoption

Adoption Central England (ACE) is supporting National Adoption Week and the #YouCanAdopt campaign which sets out to debunk myths around adoption and urging people who are considering adoption to take the next step.

The national campaign reinforces that the key attribute for adopting a child is providing a loving, safe and stable home and that factors such as occupation, salary, the size of someone’s home, home ownership or age are not important.

Our partners at the West Midlands Fire Service are running a consultation into how they can improve their services. They say responses to the consultation will shape their three-year plan for making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier.

What to do if you feel unwell, or live with someone who is unwell

Stay at home if you have either:

  • A high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
  • A new, continuous cough – this means you've started coughing repeatedly
  • Loss or change in sense or smell or taste
