Work is progressing well on the improvements to Coventry railway station. Using funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership Growth Deal we are investing £82million to improve accessibility and capacity. Our work includes:
- Creation of a second footbridge connecting all four platforms via stairs and lifts and extended platform canopies. The footbridge will connect directly to the new station building;
- A second station entrance building, with entry points from Station Square and Warwick Road alongside the new access tunnel via the transport interchange under Warwick Road will provide step free access to platforms;
- A 633 space multi-storey car park will sit on top of the new station building;
- Extension of the pedestrian boulevard to create a high-quality traffic free route from the station to Greyfriars Green
- Creation of a new taxi loop and separate vehicle drop off loop;
- A transport interchange connected directly to the station building via a new access tunnel under Warwick Road which includes a covered walkway for bus users;
- Highway improvements to Warwick Road which include upgrading the roundabout at the Central 6 junction and creating a new access road from the multi-storey car park onto Warwick Road. A new two-way link road will also be created between Westminster Road to the ring road slip road as part of the works.
The footbridge and canopies started on site last year, foundations are now in place and work continues ahead of the footbridge installation in the autumn. Work on the second station building has recently started, ground works have progressed well and now steelwork erection is underway. Once complete the station building will house up to five retail units and passenger facilities including new waiting rooms, toilets and ticket machines. A new multi-storey car park with 633 spaces will be constructed above the new station building with integrated lift access from the car park to station level.
The planning application for the transport interchange has now been submitted and you can view it at www.coventry.gov.uk/stationplanningapplication
The steel work is now visible, and the new building has begun to take shape and you can see some update photographs on the website at www.coventry.gov.uk/stationmasterplan
The substation located east of the main station building is being upgraded to enable the power supply for the new station infrastructure. As a result of these works there have been some changes to the location of bus stops, disabled and short stay parking and taxi drop-offs to enable us to carry out the work:
- Station Square north – The station short stay parking has moved to a temporary location in Station Square north, 20 minutes no return, this includes a bay for blue badge users. Traffic can exit the Station via Manor Road onto the Junction 6 off slip or alternatively via Park Road towards Junction 5.
- Bus interchange – buses have moved back to the former bus interchange off Eaton Road to the west of the station, see stands for details.
- Eaton Road/Station Square north – new one-way system in place via Station Square north for all vehicles apart from buses, deliveries and disabled short stay parking.
- Station Car Park 1 Multi-Storey Car Park – traffic exiting the multi-storey car park can now only turn right onto Park Road due to a new one-way system in Station Square north. Traffic can exit the Station via Manor Road onto the Junction 6 off slip or alternatively via Park Road towards Junction 5.
There will be further changes to Station Square later this autumn as works start on the extension of the pedestrian boulevard from Station Square north to the front of the railway station, which will include creation of a new taxi loop to the east of the station.
Construction is underway for highway improvements on Warwick Road, works are being phased to try and minimise disruption to traffic as far as possible, traffic management is in place to maintain traffic in both directions. The current phase of work on the northbound western carriageway means there is a temporary closure of the junction from Warwick Road onto Westminster Road, signed diversions are in place.
Works will commence to create a new two-way link road between Westminster Road and the Junction 7 ring road on slip mid-July. The link road will improve connectivity and help to unlock the western extent of the Friargate development.
There will be additional cycle parking delivered as part of the Coventry Station Masterplan scheme in the new station building and transport interchange.
In addition to the work above, we are working with Network Rail and Warwickshire County Council to develop a new bay platform (this means set back from the main line so it does not impede direct London trains) to enable two trains per hour between Coventry and Nuneaton.
