Welcome to the latest edition of the Coventry and Warwickshire Green Business Programme newsletter. The COVID-19 outbreak has proved to be a catalyst for companies to hit the reset button and re-think their business models and priorities. It has highlighted the need for a green and sustainable recovery, and we are hopeful that there will be more opportunities in creating green manufacturing jobs by harnessing clean technology alongside a strategy of positive change. We believe the grants that are provided through the green business programme will help provide our local businesses with that funding to make those positive changes to evolve and expand. A North Warwickshire business is running out of space in its warehouse after a rising demand for its hand wash products. Catering Equipment Ltd specialises in supplying wash basins to the catering and hygiene industry. But since the pandemic they have seen a rise in demand from hospitals throughout the UK for portable stainless steel sinks.
Catering Equipment has been helped with a grant of £3,500 through the Green Business Programme and a grant of £1,500 from the Business Support Programme, after receiving advice from the CW Growth Hub. The funding has helped with more racking for increased storage space in the warehouse as well as sustainability measures including a new combination boiler, air conditioning units and radiant heater. This has resulted in 47.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission savings per year and reduced energy costs.

 The Transport Team at Coventry City Council are running a series of interactive webinars with the Green Business Programme which will be providing insight into the success the City is having in putting sustainable transport infrastructure in place as well as discussing the emergency active travel plans being put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Did you know that Coventry is the city with the third highest number of EV charging points outside of London, and that it is also working towards being the first UK city with a Very Light Rail (VLR) transport infrastructure?
Speakers from Coventry City Council and EO Charging will provide an overview on the City’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure and workplace charging options, with a snap shot on the proposal for emergency active travel plans in this COVID-19 world.

Coventry City Council has partnered with EO Charging to support the city’s drivers in reducing their emissions by switching to electric vehicles. The two organisations have come together to create ‘Plug In Coventry’ - a fully open fast charging network that allows simple pay-as-you-go charging (no memberships, RFID cards or apps required).
The ‘Plug In Coventry’ initiative is designed to encourage local business to adopt and install an EV charging station from just £1.99 per charger per day – giving local residents, businesses and visitors the confidence to drive electric vehicles and charge on the go. The scheme removes the requirement for significant upfront investment for charging infrastructure and will help to drive footfall to Coventry’s forward thinking businesses and unlock a new revenue stream for business owners.

Innovate UK has opened applications for a share of £15 million to support the development of zero emission vehicle technologies and a supporting supply chain.
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, has up to £15m in funding from the Government and from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to support business research into these new technologies and to support the development of a supply chain. Its aim is to accelerate the UK’s ability to deliver the next generation of electric vehicles, hybrid aircraft, energy generation, smart grids, industrial drives, consumer products, agricultural vehicles, ships, and rail.
The funding competition has two strands: in strand 1, projects must develop supply chain improvements, and; in strand 2, work must target zero or very low emissions.

There are plans to build 2.75 km (1.7 miles) of two-way, fully segregated cycleway linking Coventry City Centre with Coundon Green. The new cycleway is planned to go along the Coundon Road/Barker's Butts Lane corridor. This is part of a package of plans to help make air quality in Coventry better. We want to make an easy and comfortable cycling experience which new and existing cyclists will feel confident using.
