Registrar volunteers rally to support vital work
The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in the middle of March meant that public services quickly had to adapt to new ways of working.
Among the many examples of this was at the Register Office, Cheylesmore Manor House, which quickly had to start to prepare for an increase in death registrations.
The Council-run office includes a small team of seven registrars and so a request was made to call on other areas within the Council to assist with providing staff who could be trained in registering deaths.

Plan to renew city centre public space protection order
Councillors are likely to support the renewal of a public space protection order (PSPO) to help improve the quality of life in the city centre.
The order was introduced in July 2017 to help reduce begging, manage street trading and busking - following an extensive consultation.
Its aim is to help reduce anti-social behaviour and speed up enforcement activities – only where the behaviour has been persistent.
At the Cabinet meeting on the 9 June, Council’s Cabinet will consider a report outlining the effectiveness of the existing order.

Coventry in top 5 of kindest cities in UK
Coventry has been named the fifth kindest city in the UK.
Acts such as donating to charity, offering seats up to the elderly and picking up litter were factors that helped Coventry claim its place, based on the highest average number of good deeds done per person per year.
Figures were based on a survey of over 2000 people conducted by charitable organisation 52 Lives in partnership with Gala Bingo and contained at least 50 respondents in each city.

NHS Test and Trace Service
The new NHS Test and Trace service is here.
The service will help identify, contain and control coronavirus, reduce the spread of the virus and save lives.
Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions. This could include household members, people with whom they have been in direct contact, or within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes.
People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.
If those in isolation develop symptoms, they can book a test online on the NHS website or by calling 119. If they test positive, they must continue to stay at home for 7 days or until their symptoms have passed. If they test negative, they must complete the 14-day isolation period.
Members of their household will not have to stay at home unless the person identified becomes symptomatic, at which point they must also self-isolate for 14 days to avoid unknowingly spreading the virus.

What to do if you feel unwell, or live with someone who is unwell
Stay at home if you have either:
- A high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
- A new, continuous cough – this means you've started coughing repeatedly
- Loss or change in sense or smell or taste
You can find more information and advice about COVID-19 on the NHS website. The page is being updated regularly and is the best place to go for the latest health information.
Self-isolation guidance and social distancing guidance is available in other languages.

EU Settlement Scheme update
Home Office support services and application routes have now all fully reopened in line with public health guidance.
This includes the reopening of the postal route for submitting identity documents for applicants who are unable to use the EU Exit: ID Document Check app to verify their identity.
The EU Settlement Resolution Centre continues to provide support seven days a week by email and telephone, in line with public health guidance to work from home where possible.
A video explains the support available for applicants.
Further support available
There continues to be a range of support available online, by email and telephone for those who have questions or need help applying.
Applicants can use the EU Exit ID Document check app to complete the identity stage of their application.
There are 57 voluntary and community sector organisations across the UK which can offer assistance online, over the telephone or by email to help more vulnerable or at-risk people to apply. Please check with the individual organisations for further details.
Additional support is available for those who do not have the appropriate access, skills or confidence to apply online through Assisted Digital, which can offer assistance over the telephone.
Communications materials have been translated into 26 languages and alternative formats can also be requested.
The ID document scanner locations are currently suspended at this time following the latest public health guidance to protect staff. However, the Home Office and our delivery partners are keeping this situation under constant review and will endeavour to reinstate ID document scanner locations to their original capacity in line with public health guidance.
Deadline for applications
There is still more than a year left before the deadline of 30 June 2021 for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme.
The latest Home Office statistics released last week confirmed that so far there have been more than 3.5 million applications to the scheme and more than 3.2 million applications concluded
