COVID-19 cases and related deaths in Coventry

Source: Office for National Statistics, Insight Coventry City Council

The ONS weekly deaths publication has recently started including local authority figures and a breakdown of those where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate (it doesn’t have to be the ‘underlying cause of death’). Some of the findings for Coventry are listed below:

  • There were a total of 152 COVID-19 related deaths amongst Coventry residents up to 17 April 2020, that were registered by 25 April 2020.
  • The proportion of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Coventry per 100,000 population up to 17 April 2020 is 144.0, lower than the national average of 168.1, and the lowest of all in the West Midlands.
  • The number of Coventry deaths as a proportion of the total number of verified cases is 29%, compared to 19% across England overall. These comparisons can be useful to see if Coventry is an outlier in the national context, but there is not enough information to make conclusions about reasons for the differences. These figures are also likely to be significant exaggerations of the actual mortality rate, because there are likely a large number of COVID-19 cases that have never been confirmed through testing.
  • Although the number of deaths by week of registration does not show a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 related deaths in week 16 (week ending 17 April) compared to week 15 (week ending 10 April), the figures represent a significant increase compared to the average number of deaths per week.
Coventry Covid-19 death registrations by week

The chart shows the number of deaths by week of registration up until April 17th. The totals shown in the chart sum to 138, because it includes only the deaths registered until 17th April and not later until 25th April. The total number of Covid-19 related deaths until 17th April registered in Coventry up until 25th April is 152
