Pod Cafe/Food Union newsletter

The cafe and Food union have had a busy summer hosting a number of Supper clubs and events from the collaboration with 'Mothers Who Make' to our 'Toddler Bring Your Adult' event at the allotment. Both events were so much fun and it really was wonderful to hear little voices chatting and giggling around the cafe and in nature.

British Science Festival - How does your Garden Grow?

Imagine a language that can cut across all cultural and social differences. A language that is flexible enough to capture our subtle differences, but powerful enough to move each and every one of us. Food Union – as the name implies – uses the simple power of food to bring communities together, to find healthier ways of producing and eating food, but also of thinking about and enacting community and civic identity.

The 'How Does Your Garden Grow’ event has been supported by The British Science Festival. It will start at 9:30 and finish at 13:00 and be an event for all of the family young to old. This is a great opportunity to get involved in our growing community. There will be a ‘soil to plate’ theme with interactive games around growing and produce as well as a walk around the allotment foraging and hand picking salad leaves, herbs, edible flowers and other seasonal produce which can then be eaten as part of lunch once washed. Lunch will be an interactive hands on experience, rolling your own pizza dough and adding your topping of choice and then the pizza being baked in our clay oven followed by a fire and live music.

Please note this is a working allotment site and will be a working event so wear appropriate clothing.

The event is free but needs to be booked by emailing POD.Enquiries@coventry.gov.uk

First time using capulet beans at The Pod

Last week our friends at 2B Healthy at Warwick University gave us some Capulet beans which were new to us here at The Pod. We decided to feature them in one of our dishes and so made a bean chilli to use as the filling for our burritos.

We first of all soaked the beans overnight in water, then drained them the next day and  made them into a chilli. We found the beans really easy to use and have an almost nutty flavour. We have more plans for the beans over the next few weeks.

Summer Harvest dishes

With each new week's allotment harvest, we have been coming up with new dishes which really celebrate every vegetable. These are just a few dishes:

  • Squash Pilaf with toasted almonds and green beans
  • Root Vegetable Tart served with courgette fries, mint raita, carrot ribbons, candy beetroot and salad leaves.

Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook to see what we have on next week.
