Thousands get active at this year’s Sports Fest

cheer

Sports Fest has broken its record of people taking part, with 14,500 having a go at sport during the festival.

This year Sports Fest was in partnership with Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, CityFibre, supported by Sport England Small Grants and was even bigger and better than ever as a celebration of our title European City of Sport 2019.

The free, 10-day event provided for all abilities, ages and was focused on getting people involved in sport and encouraging them to try a new activity.

Along with sports and activities, there were various stalls throughout the festival providing health and wellbeing advice, all for free. It Takes Balls to Talk, Year of Wellbeing, Coventry FHLS were amongst many that delivered the important advice.

Sports Fest brought together communities and the people of Coventry to encourage them to see how they can simultaneously get active and enjoy themselves.

As a result of extremely positive experiences at Sports Fest, many young people have signed up to join local clubs to continue the sports and activities they got involved in at this year’s event.

Games hailed as a great success for the city

The Europe Corporate Games saw thousands of amateur athletes gather in Coventry for a massive celebration of sport.

There were representatives from some of the biggest firms and organisations around the UK and Europe, and everyone agreed it was a great success.

The Council team - of over 100 people in 12 different sports - finished a very impressive 7th out of 51.

There were medal finishes for many, and everyone said they had a great time representing the Council and Coventry.

Coventry on the Move in Parks

cov on th e move

As part of Sport in the Park, phase two of Coventry on the Move in Parks was launched this month. Coventry on the Move in Parks aims to support local people of all ages and abilities to improve their levels of physical activity and have some fun.

So far, physical activity routes and distance markers with new signage are in 44 of our parks and open spaces throughout the city.

Phase two aims to create more opportunities for people to take part in physical activity for free and in their local communities.

A brand-new path has been installed in Edgwick Park, along with new outdoor gym equipment, while similar equipment is being put in place at Morris Common, Caludon Park and Quinton Park.

Kabaddi Festival

kabaddi

A Kabaddi Festival was a great celebration of culture and sport this month. Taking place at Morris Common Park, the event had singers, dancers, kabaddi, tug of war and fairground rides.

CV Life, Go CV and Vodafone Gigafast Broadband were amongst the many clubs and organisations that were present at the Festival.

The event showed visitors ways they could get involved in physical activity that are different from classic sports.

Floyd Fields Community Festival

Floyds Field

The fiesta was part of the city’s string of Community Festivals for this year aiming to promote and celebrate the benefits of sport and physical activity, in honour of its European City of Sport title.

The event was free to enter along with free hot food provided by the Langar Aid charity. In addition to many sporting activities being on offer, there were live performances by Scribble Victory, Dragonhead and the Coventry Mummers, as well as a fun family dog show.

The fiesta also raised just under £600 from a number of activities held at the event including a tombola and raffle. The money will be used to buy a defibrillator for the village, donated to two local charities – including Zoe’s Place and First Responders.

HSBC UK Let’s Ride Coventry

lets ride

Coventry is hosting a free cycling festival with a difference - giving people the chance to see the city from the saddle on a traffic free circuit including the Ring Road and Cathedral Quarter.

The event is on 8 September and runs from 11am - 3pm and there are lots of free activities from 10am in Broadgate and University Square.

You can do as many laps of the 5km circuit as you wish - and you don’t need to be an experienced cyclist as it's traffic-free. There's also a 1km option.

Take your own bike or there are bikes to hire in Broadgate (you will need ID and cash to pay).

Sign up for the event for free or simply turn up on the day.
