Celebrating Carers Week: 10 - 16 June

This year Carers Week took place from 10 - 16 June. Carers Week is a chance to both celebrate and raise awareness of carers. This year’s theme was all about connecting people with the local community. The week started early with Coventry Pride followed with a poetry and open mic set at Fargo Village.

On the Monday, Tahira and Margaret at the Carers Trust took over the Foyer at UHCW and talked to lots of carers about the support the Carers Trust Heart of England can offer over at the hospital.

On Wednesday, over 100 professionals and carers came together to attend the first ever Coventry and Warwickshire Joint Carers Conference. In the spirit of the Year of Wellbeing, it was a chance to really work across Coventry and Warwickshire with key speakers such as Izzi Seccombe, the leader of Warwickshire County Council, workshop activities and interactive polls. The conference was a chance to share good practice across councils, find out what’s going on and get connected.

On Thursday, the Carers Trust Heart of England hosted a tea and cake event, with yoga, reflexology and henna. This was a social event, a chance for people to get together, have cake, a cuppa and relax!!

A massive thank you to everyone who attended an event, took part, held a stall or just showed their support along the way.

Carers Awards - Carers Trust Heart of England

Carers Trust Heart of England are set to hold the their very first Carers Awards in July!

The work of dedicated family carers often goes unnoticed and the Awards are a chance to recognise the special carers in Coventry and Warwickshire.  Many people choose not to describe themselves as a carer – it’s just something they do for someone they care about. This is an opportunity to do something for them.

There are three carer categories:

  • Young Carer of the Year (under 18 years)
  • Carer of the Year (18 years+)
  • New Carer of the Year (someone who has been a carer for 12 months or less)

We will also be recognising the fantastic work taking place across health, social care and education supporting carers at the Award ceremony.

These categories are:

  • Care Support Worker of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Caring GP Practice of the Year
  • Caring School of the Year
  • Triangle of Care Award

The Carers Trust Carers Awards 2019 are taking place on 12 July 2019 at Coombe Abbey.

Coventry-based, Holly Matthews will be the host of the Awards and she released a video encouraging nominations for Carers:

Mike shares his caring story for the Year of Wellbeing.....

Year of Wellbeing

Everyone has their own story to share about ways they have found to care for their own wellbeing, and the wellbeing of other people. As part of the Year of Wellbeing, a team of bloggers have agreed to describe their personal journey.

Michael is a manager at the Carers’ Trust Heart of England, based in Coventry, and is a carer, too. But that’s not quite how he sees it…

Alzheimer's Society Carers Peer Support

Carers Peer Support Group

Coventry Alzheimer’s Society deliver a Carers Peer Support group for anyone supporting someone with dementia on the last Tuesday of every month. The group is facilitated by Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers and offers a safe place to talk about how dementia affects your life with others in a similar situation over a cup of tea.

Throughout the year, carers are given information on various topics and local services. Previous speakers include Speech & Language Therapists, Admiral Nurses and Carers Trust Heart of England and Cherish holidays. The sessions are led by what carers would like to discuss and at the end of each session, there is an opportunity to make suggestions about future sessions.

Carers Peer Support

If you support someone living with dementia and would like to attend our Carer’s Peer Support then please come along on Tuesday 30 July from 10:30am to 12 noon at Queens Road Baptist Church.
