Heritage Open Days 2019 in Coventry

In this issue:

Save the dates: 13-22 September

Heritage Open Days take place in Coventry and the surrounding area this September. Once again we will have some stunning buildings and activities taking part throughout the celebration so make sure you don't miss out!

25 years of Heritage Open Days

This year is both the national Heritage Open Days and Coventry's Heritage Open Days silver anniversary. Coventry has been involved from the start of Heritage Open Days and has always had incredibly strong support from venues and volunteers.

We would love to share your memories and photographs. Please send them across to karen.aspin@coventry.gov.uk

This year's theme

people power HOD 2019

The national theme for this year's Heritage Open Days is People Power. This year’s theme is inspired by two contrasting anniversaries, which highlight the different forms of People Power!

  • 200th anniversary of the Peterloo massacre: British forces attacked a massive pro-democracy rally on St Peter’s Field, Manchester. The ensuing outrage helped publicise the call for parliamentary representation and led to the founding of the Guardian newspaper.
  • 25th anniversary of Heritage Open Days:  Over the years, we’ve seen many of you do extraordinary things for your communities: opening museums, creating networks, saving sites from unsuitable developments. All of these have made - and continue to make -  a real difference. So this year, we are celebrating your achievements, which represent two and a half decades of ‘people power’ in its purest form.

Some blasts from the past...

Here is a picture of all the Heritage Open Days booklets from the beginning of the event in 1994, up to last year. Roger Bailey and Karen Aspin have both been involved from the start and both are still working very hard to bring the event to the people of Coventry. (The picture shows Roger's own collection of Heritage Open Days booklets)

Coventry Family History Society

The Coventry Family History Society is also celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Great supporters of Heritage Open Days, they usually get involved in the history fairs which take place over the HOD dates and have exhibited in St Mary's Guildhall, The Herbert, and more recently The Old Grammar School. They have helped thousands of people over the years to discover where their relatives/ancestors have come from. Once again, the society will be taking part this year.  Read more...
