Welcome to this month's Carers Bulletin. There's a lot going on in the city so this month's bulletin focuses on some of the work going on across and the importance of safe and well checks provided free by the Fire Service.
If you have any suggestions for the bulletin, an article or an area you'd like to know more information about then please email carers@coventry.gov.uk

Coventry Alzheimer’s Society provide a Carers Information and Support Programme (CrISP) for family and friends of people with dementia. This aims to aid carers understanding of dementia and to provide them with practical tips on how to support someone living with dementia, as well as themselves. Over a four week period, experienced staff and volunteers deliver information covering various dementia-related topics. This includes: strategies for caring, legal and financial matters, how to support someone to live well and further support available. As these sessions are held in a group setting, they also provide a great opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and to share experiences. A carer who attended CrISP said that they now understand that their “feelings are normal”.
CrISP is very useful for carers supporting someone in the early stages of dementia, as well as those caring for someone who is further on in their dementia journey. Benefits of CrISP include:
· Increasing carers understanding of dementia.
· Helping carers to feel better informed and “not alone”.
· Providing practical tips that carers can use day-to-day.
· Supporting carers to plan for the future.
We deliver 10 programmes a year at various locations across Coventry and at different times of the day. However, numbers are limited so booking is essential. For more information and to book a place on our next programme, please telephone Coventry Alzheimer’s Society office on 024 7665 2602 or email us on coventry@alzheimers.org.uk.
Please note that this is a carer specific group and we are unable to offer care for the person you support during the sessions.

If you are caring or have your own support needs you are likely to experience additional barriers to exiting or preventing a fire. Getting the right advice from your local firefighters can improve your chances of surviving a fire.
The West Midlands Fire Service "Safe and Well" check aims to:
- Improve safety in the home
- Give home security advice
- Give road safety advice
- Empower and motivate toward positive changes
- Signpost to appropriate services.
WMFS personnel will visit the home to check there are no immediate fire hazards, fit smoke alarms and other specialist equipment.
They will also leave you with a handbook along with details of any referrals made.

‘Coventry Library Service is overjoyed to welcome the short drama ‘Connie’s Colander’ to Coventry Libraries this spring. Everyone is welcome and the show and it is free to watch.
Connie is a retired domestic science teacher. Emily, her daughter, is enjoying hosting her first TV cookery show: Connie’s Colander, bringing her mother’s recipes onscreen and up to date. Sensitively, with humour and tenderness this newly written play traces the evolving relationship throughout their lives, and the impact of Connie’s Alzheimer’s. Can their relationship, and the TV show, survive?
The session runs for 50 minute with a 20 minute post show Q&A with a Dementia Specialist to follow.
An informal atmosphere is created for the Q&A, facilitated by the two actors, with local dementia specialists able to signpost people to their local services. Building on the story within the play, the audience is also encouraged to share their own experiences, both to ‘offload’ and also to help support fellow audience members, if appropriate.
“This is a compelling play, excellently acted and tautly directed ...” (****The Oxford Times)
“… beautifully crafted, tightly written, intensely poignant and moving exploration of the effect of dementia on a mother and her daughter…a short dramatic jewel.” (Daily Info)

Every year Carers UK circulate a national survey to carers to help understand more about the experiences of carers in the UK. The findings from the survey are generally published in July and help demonstrate the impact caring can have and provide insight for policy makers both nationally and locally.
If you have the time and would value giving your feedback, you can complete the survey online at www.carersuk.org/survey or you can download a paper copy and post.
It’s simple! Just add your email address in the top right hand corner and click GO!
You can also sign up or view previous bulletins from our Carers' website.
If you have any comments or wish to contribute something to the next bulletin, please let us know by contacting us at carers@coventry.gov.uk.
