News and Scam Alerts from Coventry Trading Standards - 25 April 2018

In this issue:

Warning: Leaflet drop offering gardening work

doorstep

Trading Standards have had reports of leaflets posted through doors in the Coundon area offering to carry out gardening work such as cutting down or trimming trees and cutting back hedges

The address given on the leaflet relates to a mailbox address.

This can be just another way an unscrupulous trader will attempt to persuade you to have work done.

Our advice is not to deal with unexpected cold callers offering any kind of service or trying to sell you something on your doorstep or respond to flyers.

If you do need work on your property or garden, use a reputable local trader who has been recommended by friends or family or someone who has been vetted and is part of the Age UK (Coventry) Trusted Traders Scheme, a partnership with Coventry Trading Standards.

This service is available to people of all ages living in the Coventry area and can be contacted by phoning 024 7643 3982.

HM Revenues - Another email scam!

hm email

PendingHMRCReimbursement : Submit your claim in the next 24 hours

Above is an example of a phishing e-mail that a local resident from the Westwood area received claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

It was received the day before the £50 'late filing penalty' would have been due to collect the refund.

Had the resident clicked on the link contained in the email there would ultimately have been a request to submit card details to obtain the 'refund'.

HMRC will never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information.

If you have received any HMRC related phishing/bogus email, please forward it to: phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it.

FIFA World Cup 2018 - beware ticket scams

iStock

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place from 14 June – 15 July 2018.  The worldwide demand for match tickets is expected to be significant.

Trading Standards is now warning fans tempted to buy from secondary sites that they run the risk of not only paying over the odds, but of not getting to their event on time or potentially not being admitted to the stadium at all.

FIFA has warned it is entitled to void any ticket purchased via unauthorised distribution channels and that during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, FIFA and local authorities will be conducting strict admission checks.

Scammers may also target victims via various social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Gumtree, or use bogus websites to sell fake or non existent tickets.

FIFA.com/tickets is the only official and legitimate website on which to buy 2018 FIFA World Cup tickets.

Paying by credit card offers greater protection over other methods in terms of fraud, guarantees and non-delivery, as long as a single ticket costs more than £100 and less than £30,000.

To access any of the Russian stadiums, fans will also need Fan ID, a document that all the spectators of 2018 FIFA World Cup matches must have to get access to stadiums.
