This report by the Social Mobility Commission acknowledges that people from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds tend to differ from their more affluent peers in terms of subsequent education attainment and earning ability. The Social Mobility Index ranks 324 lower-tier local authorities (LA) in the UK to give a guide on where people from disadvantaged backgrounds are most and least likely to make social progress. The report also states that local initiatives from LAs and universities could help to improve social mobility. Key findings include:
- The areas with the best social mobility are London and the commuter belt areas around it.
-
Coventry is ranked 96th best of all LAs in the Index, comparing favourably to the majority of the West Midlands local authorities.
