Shape Up Coventry - PDF

This
year’s Annual Report from Coventry’s Director of Public Health looks at
childhood obesity in Coventry. The report focusses on how we ensure the next
generation stays a healthy weight.
One in ten 4-5 year old children in Coventry are classed as being “obese”- a rate which more than
doubles among children aged 10-11 years. Childhood obesity
has a range of consequences including physical and mental health issues and increased school absence as well as leading to higher rates of obesity
among adults.
The Annual Report
recommends that the city adopts a whole systems approach to address childhood obesity -
one where the importance of all factors that influence childhood obesity are acknowledged and
all agents that could influence it locally are involved. A Childhood Obesity Alliance has
been established locally.

Health England has published the annual Child Health Profiles for 2017. The
tool includes a number of ways to view the statistics that provide detail into
child health in Coventry. You can click the link above to explore the
tool. Some
of the key statistics includes:
-
School readiness: 65.4%
of children in Coventry achieved a good level of development at age 5 in 2015/16. This is an increase from the rate in the previous year continuing a general trend of improvement for the last few years. However school readiness in Coventry remains worse
than the national average of 69.3%.
-
Teenage conceptions: There were 158 conceptions to girls under the age of 18 during
2015, a rate significantly higher than the national average and amongst the
highest when compared to similar local authority areas. However this is a
decrease from the rate in 2014, continuing a trend over several years of
significant improvement. Between 1998 and 2008 there were around 350
conceptions every year, this is now decreased down to 158. If the current rate of improvement continues Coventry will close the gap with the national average.

Local Alcohol Profile - Coventry data

New data has been published for these profiles - in particular
this is the first time they have included statistics estimating levels of
alcohol consumption by area.
Coventry has higher than national average rates of mortality
related to the use of alcohol and hospital admissions for alcohol related
conditions. On the other hand the amount of alcohol sold in Coventry shops ('off-trade') is similar to the national average, as is the local rate of binge
drinking and heavy drinking and the prevalence of alcohol abstention amongst
Coventry residents. These overall Coventry rates mask the difference between
demographic groups however.
