hero image

As our City of Culture bid activity builds momentum, we’re looking for exciting, creative and ambitious ideas that could form part of a Coventry UK City of Culture programme in 2021. We’re looking for a range of projects that will engage with the youth and diversity of the city, reach all sections of the population and attract national and international visitors.

And most importantly, we’re looking for ideas that are extraordinary. It’s time for our city to take centre stage and show the world all that Coventry has to offer.

Submissions close on Friday 6 January, so make sure you get your ideas in and join us on the next exciting step of the journey.

Coventry City of Culture Birmingham Launch Event

Launch event image

In November we held a successful launch event for 200 people at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Our speakers involved West Midlands figureheads, including Martin Reeves, Chief Executive of Coventry City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), and Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport and President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The speeches were supplemented by a diverse range of performances from Motionhouse, Imagineer, Ruder Than U, The Fabularium and Celtic Feet.

Our Birmingham launch event was sponsored by Birmingham Airport:

Digital Artist-in-Residence Opportunity

Digital residency

There’s now less than a week until the deadline of Monday 12 December for our Digital Artist-in-Residence opportunity.

As part of our journey, we will invite an artist to reinvent the city again – to reflect on the architecture, subculture and diversity of people in the city.

The call is for a digital artist – though we are open to proposals from musicians, dancers, visual artists, architects and others who might use digital technology in their work.

The process begins with the submission of an expression of interest. Following shortlisting we will select, and pay, between 4 and 6 artists for a city visit/interview and to produce a short proposal to include a budget and proposed timetable.

Coventry named one of country's first Heritage Action Zones

Charterhouse 2

We were very excited to find out this month that Coventry is one of the first cities in England to be named a Heritage Action Zone, following a highly competitive selection process. The scheme, which was established by Historic England, has been set up to recognise the potential of places with a rich history in the hope of them becoming focal points for sustainable economic development and community life.

Councillor Linda Bigham, Coventry council’s cabinet member for community development and Trustee of Coventry City of Culture Trust, said Coventry’s history had a ‘critical role’ to play in the future of the city and that she hoped the initiative will make people more aware of what is on their doorstep.

Talking Birds present The Cart

On Thursday 15 December, independent Coventry-based company Talking Birds will be launching their latest venture The Cart under the ring road flyover on Gosford Street.

The Cart will tour the city having conversations with communities, giving people the opportunity to ask questions about the bid, and capturing images and stories to turn into an outdoor digital film projection.

With live acoustic music from The Upsiders and free hot drinks and cake from HMS Cupcake, why not pop in between 4pm and 7pm and see it for yourself.

The Commonjets

The Commonjets return to Coventry for their last gig of 2016, a year which has seen the boys play huge support slots for bands such as The Enemy and The Sherlocks, and draw in massive audiences at festivals such as Isle of Wight Festival and Godiva Festival. Archive, the band's second single, was released in March 2016 to a brilliant response from fans and industry names.

A special show for fans and friends alike, tickets are priced at just £3, as a thank you for all the support this year, offering you the chance to be at this intimate and one-off gig at Coventry's award winning venue, The Tin. The lineup is exciting and exclusive, with an acoustic set from Craig Shelton, and up-and-coming indie band 'Candid' supporting. Flygone's Jack Waterfield will be DJ'ing before and after the bands.

Saturday 17 December, doors open at 7.30pm.
