Libraries across Cheshire West and Chester are joining the National Year of Reading 2026, encouraging everyone to GO ALL IN and discover the joy of reading.
Reading boosts wellbeing, expands your world and helps you dive deeper into the things you already love. Whether you're into sport, baking, sci‑fi, films or family time, there’s a book for it - and it’s all free to borrow in book, eBook or eAudiobook format.
Throughout the year, libraries will celebrate monthly themes including World Book Day, wellbeing, volunteering, story sessions for under‑5s, the Summer Reading Challenge and cosy autumn reading.
Joining the library is quick, free and requires no ID. Members can enjoy free books, digital resources, wi‑fi, computer access, social activities and even borrow an iPad.

The Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Sherin Akhtar, invites residents to Brew Monday at Chester Town Hall on Monday 19 January, 1 to 4pm. Enjoy a free warm drink, friendly conversation and the chance to explore this historic civic building. Donations to the Samaritans are welcome. |
Paving along Nuns Road in Chester will be lifted and re‑laid from Monday 19 January 2026 for around 12 weeks, requiring a full road closure. Dates may change depending on weather.
The paving beside the City Walls has been damaged by tree roots. The Council’s Highways Service will reuse existing paving where possible, reset tree pit edges and install a flexible resin surface to prevent future damage.
More information will be available on the Council’s website and local updates channels.
Libraries across Cheshire West and Chester will be hosting free activities to support mental and physical wellbeing during Health and Wellbeing Week, running Monday, 19 to Sunday, 25 January 2026.
The Library Service is working with partners including Age UK, Brio Leisure, Citizens Advice, Healthbox, Healthwatch, Koala Northwest, Snow Angels, Tomorrows Women and Vision Support. Residents are also encouraged to take part in the ‘Sit for Six’ daily reading challenge as part of the National Year of Reading.
Health and wellbeing marketplaces will take place at:
Other highlights include:
- Wellbeing Walks at libraries across the borough
- Crime fiction evening with authors T. M. Payne and Caroline Corcoran at Neston Library

Up to ten new Living Roof bus shelters are being introduced across west Cheshire as part of a bus stop maintenance programme.
These low‑maintenance roofs use a mix of native wildflowers and sedum, helping boost biodiversity, support pollinators and bring more greenery to local high streets. Several shelters will also feature solar panels to power internal lighting.
The Council is working with Bauer Media Outdoor UK to install the new shelters, which include covered seating. The first has now been completed on Station Road, Little Sutton, marking another step towards creating cleaner, greener neighbourhoods for everyone.
