 £1.6 million funding to be distributed to local Climate Emergency projects
The Council’s Climate Emergency Fund is going to provide a financial boost to 12 local projects that are committed to making environmental improvements, such as reducing carbon emissions and improving biodiversity. £1.6 million of funding will be used to support a diverse range of projects, which are each playing their part to help the borough to become net zero by 2045.

Improving walking, wheeling and cycling in Northwich
The Council has been awarded funding from Active Travel England to design and deliver a walking, wheeling and cycling route, connecting Northwich Railway Station to the town centre. The plans to improve pedestrian and cycling links in Northwich are available to view on the Council's website and residents are encouraged to have their say on the designs before 22 December 2023.

Decarbonising the Council’s housing stock to help meet net zero ambitions
Plans are progressing to tackle the carbon emissions produced by the Council’s housing stock. The Council owns 5,382 properties across the borough which are managed by ForHousing, our local social housing provider. A target for all properties to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of Band C by 2028 has been set, ahead of a net zero target by 2045. At present, 77% of properties have an EPC rating of Band C and above, thanks to an ongoing investment in energy efficiency upgrades in these properties.

Cut down on your festive food waste
Every year in the UK, approximately seven million tonnes of food is wasted and, just during Christmas, two million turkeys, five million Christmas puddings and 74 million mince pies get thrown out, even though they are still edible. When we waste food, we’re wasting the resources to produce it and the hours it takes to make and transport it. Plus, we’re wasting our money buying it.

Politicians plant six millionth tree of Northern Forest
Cllr Karen Shore, Deputy Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, joined a host of dignitaries to plant the six millionth tree to mark five years since the start of the ambitious Northern Forest project to link up Liverpool to Hull with trees. The Mersey Forest, the areas Community Forest, is a founding member of the Northern Forest partnership. The team welcomed Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, who joined the planting at Liverpool John Moores University during National Tree Week.

Solar Together Cheshire and Warrington wins Green Expo award
Solar Together Cheshire and Warrington, a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting UK residential customers in the installation of solar panels, has recently been awarded the Green Expo Award for Innovation in Energy. This is the first time the Solar Together scheme has run in the area and over 6,000 people registered their interest in installing solar PV systems on their homes or businesses.

Plans submitted for Ellesmere Port Market improvements
Plans for external improvements to Ellesmere Port market have now been submitted for planning approval, following a pre planning consultation held in November. The proposed works being undertaken by the Council are designed to create a more sustainable building and make the market a more welcoming and vibrant place. The energy efficiency measures proposed include the installation of solar panels on the roof, low energy lighting and increased insulation within the new external cladding.

Funding to help voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations in England improve their energy efficiency
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has recently launched a £25.5 million funding package to help voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations in England to improve their energy efficiency. Eligible organisations will be able to apply for an independent energy assessment and capital grants to install energy efficiency measures.

Youth Senate Member attends Net Zero event
A member of Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Youth Senate, the area's youth council, recently delivered session at the North West Net Zero Youth Conference. Amy, who is passionate about the environment and protecting the planet, reported the findings from the youth session to delegates at the North West Net Zero event in Liverpool last month.

Next Taskforce meeting
The Climate Emergency Taskforce will meet for the first time in 2024 on Wednesday, 17 January, 6pm – 8pm. This will be an in person meeting taking place at Chester HQ and the focus of the meeting will be transport.
