Festival for the Future – The Big Sustainability Festival
West Cheshire Museums’ Festival for the Future – the Big Sustainability Festival, returns for a second year, with an exciting programme of events and activities for people to find out about living a more sustainable lifestyle. The festival takes place over three weekends in July at various museums in the borough and includes eco-storytelling, circus performances, sustainability talks, a clothes swap, craft fair, and an art exhibition exploring the future of climate change.

Get involved with the next funding round on the Cheshire West Crowd
Cheshire West and Chester Council is launching another funding round on the Cheshire West Crowd, providing plenty of opportunities for community projects to bring their ideas to life. The Cheshire West Crowd, run by the Council in partnership with Spacehive, allows everyone to put forward community-led projects, including those addressing the climate emergency, and attract funding to make the borough more vibrant, resilient, and connected.

Pupils put their best foot forward to support Road Safety event
Every year, thousands of primary school children across the country take part in Brake’s Kids Walk to learn important road safety messages. Many schools across the borough took part throughout June, as children put their best foot forward to promote road safety and the health and planet-saving benefits of walking, with support from the Council’s Road Safety team.

Growth Track 360 call for urgent review
Growth Track 360 and Transport for the North recently held a well-attended briefing meeting for Members of Parliament from North Wales, West Cheshire and the Wirral in the House of Commons. The meeting gave its strong support for the priorities of Growth Track 360, including electrification of the North Wales Coast Main Line, which will enable faster and more efficient trains while reducing carbon emissions.

Rewilding scheme approved for grassland in Winsford
A managed grassland project has been approved, which will see areas of Winsford boosting biodiversity. The new natural grassland areas will benefit creatures great and small from the humble beetles and other insects, right up to the barn owls that venture out at night looking for food.

Cheshire farmer supported to plant new woodland and dynamic hedge
This year, The Mersey Forest has supported several local farmers to introduce trees to their land, funded through the national Trees for Climate programme. A dairy stock farm in Cheshire was one of the farms that benefited from funding, with over 8,000 trees and shrubs planted on some of their less productive land. Landowners are encouraged to get in touch if they have land suitable for tree planting ahead of the next planting season (October – March).

West Cheshire wildflowers
As part of the Council’s Wildflower and Grassland Strategy the Council have created mini native wildflower meadows across the borough to boost biodiversity and help pollinators like bees. First-of-its-kind research from the University of Chester and partners is highlighting the value of support for businesses in helping to achieve UK net zero targets. The findings from the team are addressing a gap in understanding how small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) view, learn about, adapt to, and boost UK environmental ambitions.
