Council’s energy efficiency measures recognised at regional awards
The Council has won the Local Authority Body of the Year Award at the North West Regional Energy Efficiency Awards. Achievements listed in the award submission included securing funding to switch a number of Council buildings from primary gas heating to air source heat pumps and install solar photovoltaic systems and LED lighting. The Council also saved around £2 million in energy costs by converting all streetlighting in the borough to LED lights.

'Slow Mow May’ will balance grass cutting operations in the borough
The Council is supporting this year’s No Mow May campaign, by slowing down grass cutting operations and allowing wildflowers, such as dandelions, to continue to flower and provide important sources of nectar for insects. Residents can play their part to help boost biodiversity by taking part too, whether it is a small patch of grass or your whole lawn.

Council launches first ‘School Street’ in the borough
A scheme to create a safer environment for children and ease pressures around schools during peak times has been launched by the Council. The scheme, which will see two roads in Whitby, Ellesmere Port, close to vehicles during school opening and closing times, encourages children to use active travel to get to school by creating a safer environment for walking, wheeling and cycling.

Get involved with the Great Big Green Week at your local library
Libraries across west Cheshire are celebrating The Great Big Green Week between 10 – 18 June. To highlight this national campaign and the need for urgent action on climate and nature, libraries will be holding a special treasure hunt for children, with green tips scattered around the library shelves.

Chester Cycle Buddies
To support people who would like to cycle more in and around Chester, the Chester Cycle Buddies scheme is helping to match up people with an experienced cyclist – whether it’s riding in traffic, advising on bicycle parking or getting a confidence boost.

Some of the borough’s most inefficient homes set to benefit from £2.5 million of funding
Cheshire West and Chester Council has secured an additional £2,587,500 funding to help improve the energy efficiency of some of the borough’s most inefficient homes.
Home Upgrade Grants are available to homes which are not heated by mains-gas and have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of Band D, E, F or G. The measures installed could include such things as external and internal wall insulation, air source heat pumps, and single glazed window and door upgrades, among others.

Landowners encouraged to plant a lasting legacy
The Mersey Forest is encouraging west Cheshire residents, with land suitable for tree planting, to consider creating a woodland on their land, as part of a new campaign.
The Grow Your Roots campaign, sets out how landowners can leave a positive lasting impact on their land, by planting trees. With grants available that cover up to 100% of the cost of your tree planting project and 15 years of maintenance payments, now is the time to start the application process

Green Expo – 15 to 17 June
The second Green Expo in Chester, 15-17 June, 2023, will show what has been achieved in the region on progress to Net Zero and climate change, and how it will impact how we live, work and play. This year’s June event has two components – a Youth Conference for school and college students on Friday, 16 June, and the Green Expo Exposition, which will run alongside the River Dee in Chester, on Castle Drive, from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 June. Both events are free to attend.
This year there is also a new Green Expo Photography Competition, which is open to all ages and abilities. The deadline for entries is 31 May 2023.

Active Travel Festival – Sunday 18 June
Chester’s first Active Travel Festival, ATfest, will be taking place at Castle Square, Chester on Sunday 18 June, between 11am and 4pm.
Active travel simply means making journeys in a physically active way, such as by walking, cycling or scooting. Aimed at all ages and abilities, ATfest will be fun and informative, helping to promote active travel as the natural choice for making short journeys of between one and five miles, whether to school, work or the shops.

Bus fare cap extended
The scheme that encouraged passengers to ‘Get Around for £2’ by bus from 1 January to 31 March 2023 has been extended to 31 October 2023. The scheme aims to get more commuters on buses and helps to reduce emissions and congestion by taking an estimated two million cars off the roads nationally. So, whether you are trying to save money or looking to make small changes in your lifestyle to reduce your carbon footprint, this could be for you.
