It seems early this year but the Rangers have spotted some trees already looking quite autumnal, with orange / yellowing leaves evident as we walk around our countryside sites.
With autumn round the corner, we can expect temperatures to drop and our spring / summer migrant species to have already left or be getting ready to depart for far away shores.
While we enjoy the last few weeks of August, take a look below to see what wildlife to keep an eye out for and what events the Ranger Service, and our event partners, have planned in the stunning Cheshire East countryside during September.
Get your tickets booked ASAP so you don't miss out!

What's Out and About in August
Some last minute August wildlife sighting suggestions from Ranger Pete.
-
Look out for the painted lady butterfly; they migrate to Britain from southwest Europe and North Africa. They can be seen feeding on nectar from thistles.
-
Dragonflies’ such as the common and black darter can be often seen clinging to reeds around the ponds of the Middlewood Way and Jacksons’ Brickworks. They are recognised by their sturdy bodies and are less restless movers than hawker dragonflies.
-
The attractive rowan tree can be seen laden with ripe red berries that will attract blackbirds and thrushes and provide a valuable food source. This tree is also known as the mountain ash.
-
The pinkish-purple flowers of the rosebay willowherb are found alongside the embankments of the Middlewood Way. This plant is the caterpillar food for the elephant hawkmoth.
-
Wild angelica is a perennial from the umbellifer family and is found in damp meadows and woods. It is recognised by its purplish stem and white flowers which attract insects such as hoverflies.

Thursday, 11 September - Plein Air Painting Workshop: Colour - Mixing Greens
Join us for fun Plein Air painting workshops in 2025 at Tegg's Nose Country Park. In each workshop, experienced professional painters, Christopher Clements and Kieran Ingram, will help you capture a different aspect of landscape painting.
Workshop Price £85, reserve your place with a £25 deposit on Eventbrite, the remainder will be invoiced before the course.
In September’s Workshop we’ll focus on colour mixing and when you’re painting the British landscape you can’t avoid green! If you struggle with green or just want to improve then you’re not alone. Getting the greens right will really make your painting sing and that’s what you’ll learn about in this workshop.
The exercises you’ll do will teach you how to analyse different shades of green and mix them with confidence. Once you’ve mixed your greens you’ll look at different ways to layer and contrast them to create variety and interest.
You’ll look at individual leaves, greens within trees and fields and the overall effect of lots of subtly competing shades of green.
Plus, as usual we’ll also cover the practical side of working outside with lots of helpful hints and tips to make sure you get the most out of you plein air painting sessions.
- Underpainting and layering greens
- Colour tones and temperature
- Broken colour
- Practicalities of plein air painting
All our Plein Air workshops are based on the Tonalist approach which focuses on interpretation of the light & dark tones of the landscape, while simplifying the colours. The approach will help you to make sense of what you see. You’ll be able to organise it into a well-structured painting, evoking the simple beauty of your environment.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned painter, these workshops are perfect for anyone looking to improve their Plein Air painting skills. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get out of the studio and unleash your creativity in the great outdoors.
