The continuing sunny weather has been encouraging lots of visitors out onto our sites and into the wider countryside. This is lovely to see but also leads to some less pleasant outcomes including a number of fires in the local area.
There have been some harrowing photos of the aftermath of the recent fire in the Goyt Valley (see below) and we'd like to remind all our visitors that fires and BBQ's are not permitted at any time at any of our countryside sites. Please do pass this message on to friends and family as we really want avoid similar devastation at our own countryside sites.
On a more positive note, there have been quite a few new arrivals in the Bollin Valley Partnership conservation grazing longhorn cattle herd. This year, all new longhorn cattle calves, across the country, have names beginning with Z, hence 'Zoe' in the photo above.

What's Out and About in May
Some tips on what to look out for during the remaining weeks of May, from Ranger Pete.
-
The ponds at Jacksons’ Brickworks are a good place to look for Great crested newts, which are a protected species.
-
Look out for Orange tip butterflies feeding on plants such as the cuckoo flower and garlic mustard.
-
Listen out for the screeching call of the Swift. These birds return from wintering in Africa and can be seen in good numbers on the wing.
-
Verges burst into bloom. Cow parsley is the first of the umbellifer plants to flower and attract many insects such as hoverflies.
-
Listen near hedgerows and brambles for the short scratchy call of the Whitethroat.
-
Hedgerows can be seen covered in Hawthorn blossom.

Thursday, 26 June - Plein Air Painting Workshop: Features of the Landscape
Join us for fun Plein Air painting workshops in 2025 at Tegg's Nose Country Park. In each workshop, experienced professional painters, Christopher Clements and Kieran Ingram, will help you capture a different aspect of landscape painting.
Workshop Price £85, reserve your place with a £25 deposit on Eventbrite, the remainder will be invoiced before the course.
In June’s workshop we’ll focus on painting the foreground and middle distance. This is often where much of the interest lies in a painting. It is also where the features of the landscape are seen most clearly. Getting the character and relationships of these features right is important as characters and relationships create stories.
You’ll look at trees, walls, tracks and buildings and how to use them to create a journey through your work. You’ll also look at how to give them structure and what happens as they recede into the distance.
We’ll cover:
- creating a journey through your painting
- scale and relationships
- simplification of detail
All the Plein Air workshops we’re running this summer are based on the Tonalist approach which focuses on interpretation of the light & dark tones of the landscape, while simplifying the colours. The approach will help you to make sense of what you see. You’ll be able to organise it into a well-structured painting, evoking the simple beauty of your environment.
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned painter, these workshops are perfect for anyone looking to improve their Plein Air painting skills. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get out of the studio and unleash your creativity in the great outdoors.
You can book for one or all of the workshops, to fit your schedule.
Plein Air Painting, Features of the Landscape Workshop Agenda
10:00 -12:30 Painting Exercises
Spend the morning looking at how to paint the various features you see in the landscape and how to use them to create a sense of story in your work.
12:30 - 13:30 Lunch
13:30 - 15:30 Long Plein Air Painting Study
In the afternoon you’ll produce a longer Plein Air painting study, putting the lessons from the morning into practice
Time: 10am to 3pm Meeting point: Tegg's Nose Country Park, Buxton Old Road, Macclesfield, SK11 0AP Leaders: Artists Chris Clements and Kieran Ingram Information: Email Northern Realist or visit the Northern Realist website (Bring a packed lunch / Car parking charge / Easy walking grade / Partnership event / Places limited - please book in advance / Please leave your dog at home / Please wear suitable boots and clothing / Refreshment stop, opportunity for refreshments / There is a charge for this event)
