2025/26 Programme of Works Map
Want to know what improvement works we have planned for 2025/26?
All highway improvement schemes that are planned for delivery during this financial year can now be viewed on our interactive mapping system. You can navigate to specific streets and areas you would like to see by:
- scrolling on the map
- typing in a location in the search bar
- selecting specific data, such as asset category or treatment type.
A table of all highway schemes is also available below the map so you can find location by road name, which are listed in alphabetical order. This service can be used on any device, making it a useful tool.
Due to the size of our programme, our map is updated monthly and can be found on the road repair and improvement programme webpage.

Our 2024/25 winter season wrapped-up
The winter maintenance 2024/25 season for Cheshire East Highways has now come to an end as of April 30. The season typically runs from October to April. During this time our dedicated winter team have worked tirelessly to ensure that the roads on our gritting routes were gritted and cleared of snow and ice.
 Our winter season wrapped-up:
- Our team have been on standby 24/7 throughout the season
-
73,518 km of roads treated (that's more than 3 times the total length of the Great Wall of China!)
- 5,423 tonnes of salt used
-
270 treatments of our network completed between October 2024 and April 2025
As warmer weather approaches, we will continue our focus on different aspects of maintenance and safety. In line with our emergency response efforts, we will remain ready to ensure our network operates smoothly, even during unforeseen or challenging weather conditions that could affect the borough.
Quick access to roadworks in Cheshire East
Did you know you can now access information on roadworks in the borough far quicker?
We have a live roadworks table on the council’s website. It can be found on the webpage ‘roadworks and travel disruption’ and saves time spent searching One Network as the page will direct you straight to the location.
It’s in the form of a table and gives you the option to filter the enquiry by area/road name and use the ‘map tab’ to view the location, in the usual way. But it’s a lot simpler and clearer to follow.
The information refreshes and updates every 5 minutes and contains the most up-to-date roadworks information.
All roadworks are listed with location, likely impact, description, responsibility/ownership and start and end dates. You can view the map here.
Works update
Our surface dressing programme has started!
Our surface dressing road repair treatment programme started in May through to August. Surface dressing is a preventative treatment that adds a new layer on top of an existing road surface to help prevent the ingress of water, which is the main cause of potholes, and therefore helps to maintain the lifespan of a road.
 |
|
The surface dressing process requires a number of visits and there are various preparation works that happen ahead of applying the treatment. Once we carry out the surface dressing treatment, we return to sweep up the excess chippings and reinstate the road markings. |
You can find further information on surface dressing and a list of the roads that are due to be treated in the coming months here.
Surface dressing treatments can only take place when the road temperature is mild and dry. When it rains, the work has to stop, so we may have to change the dates or work on other activities. Letters will be sent to residents and businesses on the roads that we will be treating. Signs will also be on display nearby to inform of the road closures providing dates and times of the work.
Further improvement works to last year's surface dressing locations will be carried out at no additional cost to the council.
Upcoming footway improvement schemes
We're upgrading some footways across the borough through our Flags to Flexi scheme. This is an environmentally friendly and cost effective technique we use for replacing old footway flags to a new flexible surface.
By recycling existing paving materials, we reduce waste and minimise the need to transport new materials. This method also creates safer footways and achieves a 35% reduction in carbon emissions compared to other methods.
Locations and dates:
-
Earlsway, Macclesfield (phase 2) - the road will be closed from 30 June 2025 - 25 July 2025 between the hours of 8am and 5pm
-
Swinburne Drive, Crewe - the road will be closed from 28 July 2025 - 22 August 2025 between the hours of 8am and 5pm
A34, West Road resurfacing works
We have completed our resurfacing and road markings scheme on A34 West Road in Congleton. The work was carried out on West Road / Holmes Chapel Road, extending from the Newcastle Road Roundabout to the West Road Roundabout in Congleton, consisting of 9,627m² - that's around 1.35 times the size of a standard football pitch!
The project commenced on Monday 24 March and was completed over a two-week period during overnight hours.
Park Lane, Congleton
Our Park Lane scheme is now complete!
Works included:
- Improvements to the existing bus layby opposite Congleton railway station
- Installation of a controlled puffin pedestrian crossing to improve accessibility to the train station for pedestrians
- Installation of additional pedestrian crossings on the junctions of Sefton Avenue and Ayrshire Way
- Retractable bollards located at the railway station access on Park Lane to encourage the use of one entrance / exit to improve safety for all railway station users and nearby residents
- Resurfacing works
- Footway widening
- Street lighting improvements
- Installation of new road markings and traffic signals.
The project enhances accessibility and safety for both pedestrians and cyclists traveling to the railway station and the surrounding area.
The scheme began on 3 February and took 7 weeks to complete.
National Apprentice Week 2025
 |
|
During National Apprentice Week, we attended career fairs to present our job vacancies, and highlight the new apprenticeship roles we offer.
Participating in these events led to a rise in applications for our apprentice positions for our 2025/26 intake.
Our selected apprentices took part in our internal assessment center, engaging in team-building activities and interviews. Continuing our commitment to the 5% Club, all apprentice roles for 2025/26 have now been filled!
|
Apprentices also shared their successful experiences of completing an apprenticeship on our X account promoting the benefits of combining on-the-job training whilst gaining a qualification.
Volunteering at ConNEXTions recovery hub
 |
|
A dedicated team of Cheshire East Highways staff volunteered to ensure that the garden at the ConNEXTions recovery hub in Crewe is well-maintained in preparation for the summer months.
Five employees from various departments dedicated a day to complete several tasks as part of our volunteering programme.
|
|
We were connected with the hub through Cheshire East Council's Connected Communities Noticeboard which aims to encourage social responsibility initiatives throughout the Cheshire East.
Our team's contributions included painting the garden's exterior walls, establishing a new planter, and general tidying up to inspire more community members to participate in their gardening club.

Railway Bowling Club donation
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the community, we recently visited Railway bowling club in Congleton, with our supply chain partner Euroshel.
Together, we donated and installed an old bus stop that was no longer in use as part of our works with Euroshel on our Park Lane, Congleton scheme.
This was a very rewarding project giving the older bus stop a new lease of life and providing the club more sheltered seating so the club members can now get together and play bowls in all weather conditions.
Public Satisfaction Survey
5,000 NHT public satisfaction surveys will be sent out on 4 June to a random selection of households within Cheshire East. The independent survey run by Ipsos Mori will collect opinions on and satisfaction with the Highway and Transport Services in our area. |
|
 |
Those receiving the survey can complete it either online or using the paper survey and return it in the included freepost envelope. The unique code on the survey allows for a one-time online completion only - there are no additional codes and it will not work for other household members or friends or family.
We have paid for 5,000 surveys, so 5,000 surveys will be sent out to the randomly selected households within Cheshire East – no one can request a copy of a survey.
