2024/25 Programme of Works Map
The interactive map, which was introduced last year, has redeveloped the way we display our road repair and improvement programme.
All highway schemes that are planned for delivery during the 2024-2025 financial year can now be viewed on our interactive mapping system. You can navigate to specific streets and areas you would like to see by:
- scrolling on the map
- typing in a location in the search bar
- selecting specific data, such as asset category or treatment type.
A table of all highway schemes is also available below the map so you can find location by road name, which are listed in alphabetical order. This service can be used on any device, making it a useful tool.
The data will be regularly updated to keep you up to date with the progress of the schemes. The system can be found on the road repair and improvement programme webpage.

A year of highways highlights...
Green Season
Did you know that we maintain approx. 5.8 million square metres of roadside grass verge on Cheshire East's adopted highway? 'Our Growing season' begins in March until November so you'll spot us working on green maintenance during this period!
We cut grass to:
- help road safety, making sure there is good visibility at bends and junction
- keep road signs clear
- give room for people to pass on the pavement.
 If you believe that grass cuttings are creating a hazard on the pavement, please report it to us under the 'street sweeping' category. We do not collect or remove grass cuttings.

Quick access to roadworks in Cheshire East
Did you know you can now access information on roadworks in the borough far quicker?
We have introduced a live roadworks table on the council’s website. It can be found on the webpage ‘roadworks and travel disruption’ and saves time spent searching One Network as the page will direct you straight to the location.
It’s in the form of a table and gives you the option to filter the enquiry by area/road name and use the ‘map tab’ to view the location, in the usual way. But it’s a lot simpler and clearer to follow.
The information refreshes and updates regularly and contains the most up-to-date roadworks information.
All roadworks are listed with location, likely impact, description, responsibility/ownership and start and end dates. You can view the map here.
St Anne's Primary School Donation
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the community, we recently visited St. Anne's Catholic Primary School in Nantwich to provide donations of materials that were no longer in use.
Together with some of our supply chain partners, we contributed items like cones and drainage pipes. These donations can now be repurposed by the school for a range of playground activities.
Supporting Cheshire Police
Our street lighting team installed signs along David Whitby Way, Crewe on behalf of Cheshire Police to help tackle dangerous driving in the area.
In the past 12 months, Cheshire Police officers have responded to 23 individual reports of illegal car meets and anti-social driving on the road.
As part of the initiative designed to curb future irresponsible driving in the area, officers from the Crewe Beat Team and the Local Policing Unit have been working with us to place signage along the carriageway. These signs act as a warning to motorists that those who do not respect the rules of the road, and their fellow drivers, will face consequences.

Mill Race, Waterlode, Nantwich

We joined forces with local volunteers, to transform the seating area in Nantwich, which overlooks Mill Race, Waterlode.
The area was sealed off whilst these works were taking place for safety reasons, but has now reopened.

The team have taken up the brickwork and re-layed it, built planters around the roots of the trees and created a seating area. This has helped to preserve the trees, as well as providing a space to enjoy the riverside scenery again!

Volunteering at Middlewich Bowling Club

A team of Cheshire East Highways staff have been helping to ensure Middlewich Bowling Club is in great condition ahead of the start of the new bowling season.
Thirteen staff from across the business each spend a day working on a number of tasks through our volunteering programme.

We were connected with the club through Cheshire East Council's Connected Communities Noticeboard which seeks to promote social responsibility activity across the borough. Tasks delivered by our team included gardening, painting, irrigation of the bowling green, various repairs weeding and general tidying-up. |

Works update
Station Road, Wrenbury - drainage improvement and carriageway resurfacing scheme
We will be replacing and upgrading the drainage system along Station Road, Wrenbury as well as resurfacing the road. The work will take place between the junction of Station Road / Wrenbury Road and to a point where the road crosses the River Weaver.
Works to deliver these drainage and road improvements are scheduled to start on 3 June 2024, and will take approximately 15 weeks to complete. The duration of the works is to allow for phasing to help facilitate access to businesses and residents.
The following works will take place:
- Installation of a new drainage system, including new surface water pipes, road gullies and manholes
- Installation of a new outfall and headwall at the River Weaver
- Road resurfacing and improvement works
- Reinstatement of road markings
- Kerbing, signage, fencing, hedge replanting, soil and seeding.
Before the work commences, we will continue to monitor Station Road through our programme of routine and ad-hoc safety inspections in line with the council’s Code of Practice for Highway Safety Inspections. Any intervention level defects which are identified will be repaired promptly to keep the road safe ahead of the proposed improvement works.

Our Surface Dressing programme starts soon!
Our surface dressing road repair treatment programme starts in July through to August. Surface dressing is a preventative treatment that adds a new layer on top of an existing road surface to help prevent the ingress of water, which is the main cause of potholes, and therefore helps to maintain the lifespan of a road.
The surface dressing process requires a number of visits and there are various preparation works that happen ahead of applying the treatment. Once we carry out the surface dressing treatment, we return to sweep up the excess chippings and reinstate the road markings.
You can find further information on surface dressing and a list of the roads that are due to be treated in the coming months here.
Surface dressing treatments can only take place when the road temperature is mild and dry. When it rain falls the work has to stop, so we may have to change the dates or work on other sites. Letters will be sent to residents and businesses on the roads that we will be treating. Signs will also be on display nearby to inform of the road closures providing dates and times of the work.
Delamere Street, Crewe
Our Delamere Street, Crewe scheme is now complete! The works included the installation of a new contraflow cycle lane and one-way system with the aim of improving access to the town centre.
The scheme commenced on 19 March and took 13 weeks to complete.
Completion of A529 Green Lane, Audlem Embankment Repair Scheme
Our Green Lane, Audlem scheme was completed on 23 February following a 5 week closure to allow for embankment repairs.
As part of the scheme, we used PIER Ex Vac to safely remove loose clay and soil from the failed embankment close to a live 12 inch cast iron sewer pipe. We worked closely with other teams to carry out works within the closure, including gully emptying and jetting to minimise further disruption.
North West Crewe Package (NWCP)
Recent progress
- Installation of new drainage across existing Smithy Lane which included carefully excavating around electric and telecommunication cables, a high-pressure water pipe, and a medium pressure gas pipe
- New carriageway construction over existing Smithy Lane linking either side of Bob Brown Way
- Creation of new access to Leighton Hospital from hospital roundabout (RBT 5)
- Installation of street lighting columns and road signage on Bob Brown Way
- Tree, hedge, and shrub planting across the site
- Carriageway construction and kerb installation on new Tottys Hall Way linking RBT 5 and RBT 6
 The North West Crewe Package highways and infrastructure scheme in Crewe is in the final stages of works, with completion scheduled for July.
The new road called Bob Brown Way opened to traffic between Milehouse Roundabout on the A530 and the new hospital roundabout on Saturday 4 May. This will form the new access to Leighton Hospital.
Smithy Lane – between the A530 Middlewich Road and Leighton Hospital – and Bob Brown Way between Fairfield Roundabout and the hospital roundabout opened to traffic on Friday 17 May.
Both temporary and permanent signage is in place to direct people to the hospital depending on which direction they are travelling from.
