Welcome to the 11th edition of the North West Crewe Package newsletter
The North West Crewe Package (NWCP) is a large-scale infrastructure project, which will improve roads and junctions, bringing forward opportunities for housing developments and for local businesses to expand. We are well over halfway through the scheme, which is being delivered on our behalf by Balfour Beatty.
Despite heavy unseasonal rainfall in July and August, we are still on course to complete the scheme next spring.
For an overview of the project, you can also keep up to date via our website at: cheshireeast.gov.uk/home/NWCP or by contacting the project liaison officer at Balfour Beatty, Steven Doolan, by email: steven.doolan@balfourbeatty.com
Monthly progress
During the months of June and July, the construction of Flowers Lane roundabout on the A530 was completed, this included all carriageway construction, surfacing, white lining, lamp posts and street signage installation.
Following on from the opening of the A530 Middlewich Road; Flowers Lane has now been closed to allow for the construction of ‘Fairfield Roundabout’.
Deep drainage installation has continued along the North/South Spine Road. Works have also continued on Smithy Lane West and Minshull New Road Roundabout, finalising drainage connections and starting carriageway construction.
Charity hub
Balfour Beatty and Town & Country Fencing have been working in partnership to create a fantastic outdoor space for the team at the Wishing Well hub.
Wishing Well are an amazing charity that provides a safe space for adults with learning difficulties, and daily wellbeing support such as cooking classes, arts and crafts and wellbeing walks.
The outdoor space was very uneven and needed some much-needed tlc, which we are proud to have helped with. This space can now be used in a much safer manner for the hub members and more activities can now be planned. Well done to everyone involved in this brilliant project.
Upcoming works
The full road closure will remain in place on Flowers Lane until November. This is allowing the surface water drainage to be installed and full depth carriageway construction to take place on the roundabout. Water and electricity services will also be diverted.
The construction of the East/West link road and Smithy Lane West carriageway will continue in preparation for the road surfacing.
Deep surface and foul water drainage will continue along the Spine Road.
Traffic management
In June, a full closure was put in place along Flowers Lane so that we can construct the new Fairfield Roundabout. This road closure is expected to be in place until November.
In July we closed Minshull New Road so that we could carry out the works to link it up with the new Fairfield Roundabout, near Leighton Brook. This work has been taking place during the school holidays to minimise the disruption to residents, and we will reopen the road this week.
Tank installation
To help prevent flooding in the Leighton Brook area during heavy rainfall, a large ‘attenuation tank’ has been installed.
To demonstrate just how large this tank is, its installation has already seen 60 cubic metres of concrete being poured in – with another 200 cubic metres to be poured in the coming weeks.
The 24 external wall units that make up the tank have been lifted into place by a crane and each weighs up to 8.5 tonnes – a similar weight to a school bus. Each unit has all been installed to millimetre accuracy!
