Weather impact on our drainage systems
Although we're into the summer months, the recent unpredictable weather and heavy rainfall we have been experiencing in Cheshire East can overwhelm the capacity of our drainage system, causing rain water to gather on the road.
The rain water will usually subside in the days following this weather and drainage systems will then return to a normal level.
The drainage systems underneath our gullies vary in the speed they can drain water away and some will overflow during heavy rain, even if there is no blockage. This does not mean the gully requires cleaning, and the water will clear when the rain stops.
We routinely clear our gullies and respond to reports of blocked or overflowing gullies. You can view when we last cleared or maintain a gully here.

When should a street light be reported?
If you spot a street light with any of the below issues, let us know by reporting it to us:
- If the lantern is hanging down
- If the column door is missing or wires are exposed
- If the column is leaning
- If the column was hit in a road traffic collision

Who is responsible for street lighting?
We are responsible for maintaining most of the street lights on adopted roads in Cheshire East. When reporting street lighting issues to us, it's useful to have the column number to hand as this helps us identify the exact column.
Street lights on private land such as supermarket car parks are the responsibility of the land owner, not Cheshire East Highways - any issues with private street lights should be reported to the land owner.
Parish and town councils usually look after decorative, architectural or feature lighting and any issues with this kind of street lighting can be reported directly to the town or parish council.
Flag Lane, Crewe Link Road works are complete!
Following 12 weeks of work, the ‘Flag Lane Link’ improvements are now complete with the installation of a new junction at the end of Harrison Drive.
The completed works are part of a package of projects being supported by the government’s Future High Streets Fund, following the council’s successful bid for a total of £14.1 million of funding.
The Flag Lane Link aims to improve access to the town centre, reducing congestion and journey times in and out of Crewe by linking Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane. There was also an upgrade to the zebra crossing, which is in place on Flag Lane.
During the works, we implemented a temporary cycle lane which was praised by the locals and ACTive Travel members who awarded our team with a certificate for going above and beyond to maintain cycle access.

Our staff successes
Our highways hero
We're proud that Mark Smith, our Construction Supervisor has been shortlisted for the Highways Heroes award following 45 years in the industry. At the age of 63, Mark continues to inspire us all with his persistent dedication and selflessness.
Mark began his career in the industry sector when he was only 16 and has since played significant roles during road traffic collisions, flooding occasions and in the challenging and occasionally terrifying government response to the foot-mouth outbreak in 2001. When foot and mouth disease first appeared, Mark worked closely with the army to control traffic and construct farm tracks to help combat the disease.
The Highways Heroes award recognises anyone who has shown courage, bravery, noble qualities or simply went over and above to help or support someone or a situation and we believe that Mark is a fantastic example.

Works update
Rode Mill Culvert Replacement
Culvert replacement works on Rode Mill Culvert are experiencing delays due to the recent heavy rainfall across the borough. We now anticipate that the works will be complete mid October 2023, and apologise for this unforeseen delay.
The construction of the base slab has now been completed and the steel arch sections of the new culvert are being constructed, ready to be lifted and installed.
Due to the nature of the works, Church Lane between the junction of Chance Hall Lane and Congleton Road North will remain under a 24-hour road closure for the remaining duration of the works.
Thank you for your patience whilst we complete these works.

Footway programme 2023/24
We're continuing to work our way through our footway programme and have recently laid new surfaces on Primrose Hill in Crewe!
We use a range of patching and resurfacing footway treatments by choosing which treatment is the most appropriate in each situation and will give best value for money in the long term.

Surface dressing
|
|
The first two phases of surface dressing works on many of our programmed roads are now complete.
Surface dressing is cost effective way of improving road surfaces. It helps keep roads in a good condition and will help to prevent cracks and potholes. It adds a new layer on top of an existing road surface and is a preventative maintenance treatment.
When the work takes place, we visit the road a few times. We prepare the surface, carry out the surface dressing and then we return to sweep up the excess chippings and reapply the road markings.
Our roads that will be surface dressed up until September 2023 can be found here.
