Surface dressing is underway
 |
|
Our programme of surface dressing treatment started at the end of July and will be completed by late September.
So far, work is underway on Macclesfield Road Alderley Edge, Buxton Old Road Disley and the A556 Chester Road.
|
We ask for your patience as our team work to improve the road surface. We have to close all or part of the road while we work, and we will let you know by letter if this work is taking place where you live. There will also be signs displayed nearby to notify you of the closure. Sometimes the programme of work is subject to change due to the weather.
Surface dressing adds a new layer on top of an existing road surface. During the works, we will visit the road a few times to prepare the road, to carry out the surface dressing and we return to sweep up the excess chippings and reinstate the road markings.

Road closures and diversion routes
|
Have you ever followed an official road diversion route and wondered why it seems like a long way round?
When one of our roads is closed to undertake planned roadworks, a diversion route will be signposted. You can view current and upcoming planned roadworks, road closures and other traffic disruptions on the One Network website.
|
|
 |
We always try to keep roads open, but sometimes the nature of the works means that a full closure is the only way to provide public and worker safety, or if a utility needs to work using a large excavation or on equipment over the road. So, while a closure may be frustrating, it’s there for a reason.
When considering alternative routes, we must choose roads of a similar or higher classification to the one we are closing. For example, if we close a ‘B’ road, our alternative official diversion route(s) will have to be some combination of ‘B’ roads or ‘A’ roads where possible. This may well mean that any ‘official’ diversion is not always the shortest one. We do this to ensure all types of road user can safely follow the diversion route, including larger vehicles, and buses if we are closing a bus route. We also have to consider the height and weight of vehicles who will have to follow the diversion.
We understand that if you are familiar with the local area, you may know some shortcuts. But these may not be suitable to carry all vehicle types or volumes of traffic needed.
Please help us by following the official diversion routes we provide. Thank you.
Respect our workers
 |
|
We are urging residents across Cheshire East to respect our road workers this summer.
With the school holidays now underway, you will see more roadworks taking place, because traffic flows are reduced, and disruption can be minimised. Please be patient if you do come across roadworks.
|
Our teams carry out vital work for our communities to keep people safe and traffic flowing. They should be treated with the same courtesy and respect as anyone else and should not have to face abuse and threats of violence.
June's highways highlights
We produce a summary report which shows an overview of the work we have completed. Did you know, in June we emptied 3,172 gullies! To view a breakdown of our works in June, click here
Works Programme updates
Each month we update our website to show progress against schemes included in this year’s programme.
The list has been updated and will next be updated at the beginning of September. You can view it in more detail and the scoring method for each here:
Trees, hedges and weeds
 |
|
Grass cutting
We cut the grass 10 times a year in towns and other roads that have a speed limit of 30 mph and 40 mph approximately every 4 weeks depending on the weather. Some verges in these areas are cut less often to help support wildflowers and insects.
Grass verges are refuges for plants, birds and insects. To protect this wildlife, we only cut grass verges in rural areas once a year.
You can read more on our grass cutting webpage.
|
Hedges
Most hedges and trees overhanging public roads and footways are privately owned and the landowner must look after them. We can only get involved if there is an immediate danger such as a fallen branch across a footway or road.
We do have a responsibility to look after highway trees and hedges. Highway trees are usually trees with roots on the footway. Highway hedges usually have a road or footway on both sides.
 |
|
Weed control
We have an annual programme of weed spraying covering all public roads, footways and paved areas. This year's programme started on 1 August 2022 and will last for approximately eight weeks, subject to weather conditions.

To report an issue with a grass verge, tree, or hedge, you can use our online form.
New Traffic Regulation Order database system
We have recently updated our traffic regulation order (TRO) system to an online map system.
TRO's are legal documents that are required when creating speed limits, waiting/loading restrictions, turning bans and one-way street, weight limits and prohibition of vehicles and bus lanes and taxi ranks.
The project is now complete and the online system has replaced paper documents with an online map system called ‘ParkMap’ and can be accessed by clicking:
Accessing the map-based system provides you with access to up-to-date information online, on all existing and proposed traffic and speed restrictions. You can read more here.
Street Lighting Safety
We provide street lighting to light public roads and pavements, helping road users see potential hazards.
On the very rare occasion that you may come into contact with a damaged street lights or an illuminated bollards, please report it to us as soon as you can as it may be dangerous. Please do not attempt to touch or move it. We will assess the equipment and make it safe.

We are using solar panels to operate our on-site cabin and welfare units to reduce environmental impact during the scheme. In one week, it saved 1.4 tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to planting 70 trees a year
We also have an Echo Barrier set up for cutting materials, which reduces noise pollution and also reduces the amount of dust which enters the air!

|
 |
Our team working on the scheme have recently achieved a Considerate Constructor award following a successful audit. The award is a national initiative designed to encourage best practice and raise standards in the construction industry. We were assessed on various areas including how we respect the community, care for the environment and value our workforce - we're proud of our team for their hard work!

North West Crewe package (NWCP)
Construction activities continue for the North West Crewe Package which will significantly ease congestion in the Leighton area and create quicker routes to the hospital. It will improve roads and junctions, bringing forward opportunities for housing developments and for local businesses to expand. It will take place over the next two years.
The current traffic management is as follows:
- The A530 Middlewich Road remains closed between Pyms Lane and Smithy Lane with a diversion in operation via Flowers Lane
- 2-way lights are being installed from Smithy Lane for diversion works
|
|
 |
- There will be narrow lanes between Smithy Lane and the composting facility, Biowise, for the new Smithy Lane roundabout works
Access to the hospital is unaffected to all users other than those on the A530 approaching from the direction of Nantwich. The Hospital ‘H’ symbol should be followed along the official diversion route. This route automatically becomes the existing hospital route at University Way.
You can keep you up to date with the project by signing to the North West Crewe Package newsletter.
