Patching and surface dressing schemes underway
As the weather improves, our road maintenance activities increase as many road treatments need dry or warm weather. Although road repairs are carried out all year round, you will now see more pre-surface dressing patching work. We do this to prepare the roads for surface dressing which swings into action from July onwards to repair, improve and prolong the life of our roads.
We will let you know by letter if the work is taking place where you live.
During some of these schemes, we use the opportunity to complete other highway activities including footway works, sign cleaning, gully emptying and additional patching as well as the resurfacing and lining works.
You can read more on our website about types of road treatments and why we use a range of patching and resurfacing types.

April's highways highlights
We produce a summary report which shows an overview of the work we have completed. Did you know, in April we emptied 4,706 gullies! To view a breakdown of our works in April, click here
Works Programme updates
Each month we will be updating the progress, locations and any additional schemes of this year’s programme.
The list was last updated at the start of May and will next be updated at the beginning of June. You can view it in more detail and the scoring method for each here:
We may have identified your road for improvement works but it doesn’t always mean it will be in this year’s programme. It is likely that it will be included for repairs over the longer term. This is because there is only a limited budget available, so we prioritise the works on roads where they are most needed using a scored approach. Our programmes sometimes change if more funding becomes available.
Gritting season is over!
Another winter season has been tackled by our winter maintenance team whilst battling storms and challenging weather events along the way! April marked the end of our official winter season and luckily, compared to last year, spring came at the right time without the need for further treatments in May.
Overall, we treated 61,828km of road across Cheshire East this season, requiring lots of hard work and dedication from our winter team, who completed 172 gritting runs, using 6,330 tonnes of salt in the process.
Our gritters will be back out in October.

Supporting road safety education at Crewe pre-school
After removing old traffic signals from site on Dunwoody Way during work to upgrade the signals, we approached local nursery Rainbows, and offered them two of the traffic pedestrian push buttons.
The buttons will help to teach the young children how to cross a road safely, by showing how to stop and wait at a pedestrian crossing until the lights say otherwise.

Nursery manager at Rainbows Preschool, Sabia Hoque said “I was extremely pleased when the highways team contacted me about the idea and the prospect of teaching the children road safety skills which will follow them throughout their lifetime. I am so grateful.”’
The nursery has recently refurbished their outside area, with the donated push buttons making a great addition to their new playground. |

Traffic Regulation Order consolidation
We have recently updated our traffic regulation order (TRO) system to an online map system. TRO's are legal documents that are required when creating:
- Speed limits
- Waiting/loading restrictions
- Turning bans and one-way streets
- Weight limits and prohibition of vehicles
- Bus lanes and taxi ranks
The project which is ongoing and will be completed this summer, will use an online system to replace paper documents that have become outdated. This work is part of the Council’s digitisation of TRO's to an online map system called ‘ParkMap’.
Accessing the map-based system will provide you with access to up-to-date information online, on all existing and proposed traffic and speed restrictions. You can read more here.

Bird nesting season - your trees and hedges
 |
|
Most hedges and trees overhanging public roads and footways are privately owned and the landowner must look after them. However they cannot be cut from March to August this year due to birds nesting.
When bird nesting season ends, we would encourage and appreciate you cutting back your hedges where the vegetation overhangs the highway.

We can only get involved if there is an immediate danger such as a fallen branch across a footway or road.

Bridge made of recycled plastic!
Last month we used recycled plastic material to replace the timber footbridge on the Bollin Valley cycleway in Wilmslow. The existing bridge was in poor condition and was rotten and slippery a long term solution was needed for reconstruction. The planks used to construct the bridge are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, helping to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint. The main beams had localised repairs and the hard wood was treated to ensure durability and sustainability.
Ongoing and works coming up

The road will be closed in three phases for pedestrian and road safety enhancements including upgrading the zebra crossing, installation of new kerbing and central island improvements. We will return in October to resurface and re-line the street.
We will be holding a drop-in session at the Nantwich Civic Hall on the 26 May from 09:00am – 12:00pm. The session is open to anyone who would like to attend to discuss the scheme.
More information about the scheme will be shared on the Cheshire East Council website soon.
North West Crewe package
Construction activities have begun for the North West Crewe Package with preparatory works on the first two roundabouts and the construction of the site compound off the A530, Middlewich Road. Award success
Recognised for our work on Bollin Grove
Our work to reconstruct a riverside wall in Prestbury has been praised by the Institute of Highway Engineers.
The project by our team at Bollin Grove was highly commended in the Team of the Year category at the IHE’s Mercia branch awards.
A number of challenges were overcome as we worked with many partners and organisations on this innovative scheme to safely reconstruct the retaining wall rising from the riverbed at a location where water levels are somewhat unpredictable.

Civic Award for Castle Street
We are thrilled that a scheme we delivered last year has been bestowed a Civic Award from Macclesfield Civic Society. It recognises the innovative project, delivered last year on behalf of Cheshire East Council, to improve and enhance Castle Street in Macclesfield. The £1.6 million public realm enhancement project transformed what was a tired looking town centre street into an invigorated area which now has renewed vibrancy and increased alfresco activity.

Cheshire East link road project scoops two more top accolades
Cheshire East Council’s biggest ever infrastructure scheme has scooped two more prestigious awards.
The £90m Congleton link road project team won ‘large project of the year’ at both the Institute of Highways Engineers’ (Mercia Branch) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation 2022 awards ceremonies.
The project team, made up of Cheshire East Council and contractors Graham and Ringway Jacobs’ staff, delivered the 5.5km Wolstenholme Elmy Way – on budget – against a backdrop of severe challenges of exceptional wet weather and disruption due to the Covid pandemic.
