 Highways, roads, and pavements
Welcome to your new newsletter from the Cheshire East Highways team. This regular update will be published monthly and is designed to provide you with news and information about our highways service. You can expect to see information from the service and also details of what we have coming up in the next month.
We hope you find this useful and we would welcome any feedback on highway topics we could cover in future editions cehcomms@cheshireeasthighways.org
We're responsible for managing most roads and footpaths in Cheshire East and are also responsible for grass verges, cycle routes, bridges, road gullies, road signs, street lights, pedestrian crossings, and traffic lights.
 2021-2022 achievements
Each month, we produce a summary report which shows an overview of the work we have completed. Did you know, last year we undertook 11,185km of safety inspections! To view a full breakdown of our works in 2021-22, click here
Launch of 2022 - 2023 programme of works
We’re pleased to share this year’s programme of highway works following the agreement of the Council’s 2022/23 budget. We identify and prioritise what maintenance, repair and improvement work to do each year. We do this through our highways asset management approach.
You can view the full programme in more detail and the scoring method for each in more detail here:
Keep an eye on the webpage as we will be updating the progress of the programmes every month.
Investing to save
Cheshire East Council has voted to increase its spending on roads maintenance by £19m over the next three years as part of its ‘invest to save’ strategy.
The aim is to help tackle the borough’s crumbling 2,700km network, amid cuts in government funding for highways – and reduce the number of potholes that need repair. In addition to local funding, each local highways’ authority receives annual roads maintenance and repair funding from central government.

How we provide information
We use a range of ways to provide information about Cheshire East Highways, including:
Cheshire East Highways Webpages
Your first, quickest and most detailed information source is our website. Our pages contain useful background information on most highways topics. We update and add pages regularly – most recently we added information about highway improvement work on Wilmslow Bypass. The website is also the place where highway problems should be reported in the first instance, as they are automatically passed through to our inspectors – you can even track the progress of a report you have made.
|
@CECHighways Twitter account
We have a Twitter account that provides useful information: @CECHighways – for general service information, including advance notice of selected works; scheme updates and photos showing our works underway or completed. We also provide real-time updates on any key closures and during adverse weather events to help you plan your journeys through the borough. Please note, the account is not continuously monitored and highways issues should always be reported via our website or telephone and not social media.

One Network - Roadworks map
If you want to find out about any roadworks in Cheshire East, go to the one.network website to use an interactive map to find more details covering planned and ongoing works by Cheshire East Highways, utility companies and developers. It will also show official diversions where relevant. Please note that some roadworks take place due to emergency works so are not always listed on the map.

Inspiring local students and supporting the local community
In March we attended Brine Leas High School in Nantwich to take part in their annual careers fair. It was a great opportunity for their students to ask us questions regarding a career in highways and for us to show them how proud we are about what we do! Since Covid, our careers support has been mostly virtual, so it was great to be back meeting people face to face!
We regularly support the local economy, the environment, and our local community by various volunteering work, educational visits and donations to fantastic causes. The picture below shows some highlights from the past year.

We support the Armed Forces
We continue to build relationships with the armed forces which helps us to support our staff who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.
We proudly hold a gold armed forces covenant award, which you may see on some of our highways vehicles. This demonstrates our support to our ex-military and reservist staff and our pledge to helping members of the armed forces community.
In March, we attended a Build Force event which was aimed at supporting service leavers and veterans into a career in highways.

North West Crewe Package (NWCP)
Main works will start on the North West Crewe Package (NWCP) scheme next month and will see a series of highways and junction improvements made around the Leighton area to ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital, as well as to new and existing housing developments.
The NWCP will include the construction of a new road linking Smithy Lane, Minshull New Road and Middlewich Road (A530), as well as the realignment of Smithy Lane, Flowers Lane and improvements to other road junctions associated with the scheme. The package also includes the extension of the Connect 2 walking and cycling route to Leighton Hospital and North West Crewe.
In addition, a section of Minshull New Road outside Leighton Academy will be closed to traffic and will create a safer environment for children arriving and leaving the school.
The main works are being carried out by contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of Cheshire East Council and will take place from May 2022 for around two years. This follows a package of early enabling works for the scheme, carried out earlier this year.
The scheme, which is supported by £10m of funding from the Housing Infrastructure Fund, will bring opportunities for local businesses to expand and help to unlock the delivery of more than 1,200 homes and a sustainable community with new local services, green infrastructure, allotments, walking and cycle links, outdoor sports and recreation facilities and a new school.
Regular updates about the NWCP works will be provided as they progress and you can also find out more about the scheme, here: North West Crewe Package (cheshireeast.gov.uk)
If you have a question about the NWCP and cannot find the answer by visiting the scheme’s dedicated webpage, please email: nwcp@cheshireeast.gov.uk
