An update from the Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jewel Miah

Christmas Lights go up 2024

The new lights are up and ready to be switch on this Friday, 29 November.

Big events organised by Council

I’m excited for the Christmas Lights Switch-On in Loughborough this Friday, 29 November!

It’s the start of a festive weekend packed with fun, including activities on Saturday and Sunday, capped off with a free outdoor cinema in the town centre.

The Council proudly organises this event, which draws thousands of people to Loughborough every year.

This year, we’ve invested in brand-new Christmas lights to make the town centre even more inviting for visitors and shoppers alike.

Congratulations also to Felicity Chan who has been chosen in a Council competition to switch on the lights this year. I'm told Felicity has been incredibly supportive to her parents so I would like to wish them all the best and I hope they enjoy the switch-on.

The festive events come hot on the heels of another successful Loughborough Fair, and I would like to thank all Council staff involved. Without their dedication and commitment, events like the fair would simply not happen.

Thanks also to partner organisations who are incredibly supportive of our events programme and, of course, to everyone who attends.

Look forward to seeing you on Friday! The entertainment starts at 4pm and the big switch on is at 6.30pm.

Charnwood Sports Awards 2023 winners and runners-up

Winners and runners-up from last year's sports awards

Sporting dreams

Good luck to all of the finalists in the Charnwood Sports Awards final which is coming up soon.

It is inspiring to see so many talented people doing well in a sport and activity that they love.

The awards are also about the volunteers and the people behind the scenes who make sure thousands of people in the borough can take part in an activity - it really is important to be active and healthy.

And of course, it wouldn't be the Charnwood Sports Awards without a sprinkle of elite performers thanks to Loughborough being home to a world-class sporting university.

The Council is proud to organise the sports awards and highlight the achievements of local people and organisations.

Delivering savings

The Council has successfully brought its revenues and benefits service back in-house to make savings over the coming years.

Customers should not have noticed any changes as we made the transition. We are now focussed on bedding the service in.

The move will deliver significant savings in the coming years which means we can ensure funding is being maximised for frontline services.

Local government funding is challenging, but rest assured Charnwood is working hard to make the most of every taxpayer pound.
