In this edition you will find information about the upcoming local elections, details about the upcoming bank holiday Mondays in May, the return of the tenant garden competition and a reminder about the changes to ward boundaries in Charnwood.
Bank holiday Monday information
With a number of bank holidays coming up over the next few weeks, we have put together a web page with some information about our services and opening times.
The bank holidays include Monday May 1 followed by Monday May 8 for the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

Have a say and remember your photo ID
The Council has recently issued a reminder to residents across the borough about the upcoming local elections on Thursday May 4.
In addition, those heading to a polling station are also being urged to remember to take along their photo ID.
The requirement to show photo ID at the polling station, is a new requirement introduced by the UK Government’s Elections Act which was passed last year.
A list of accepted ID is available on the Council’s website, along with more information about the new requirement and frequently asked questions. For more information, visit charnwood.gov.uk/VoterID
Votes will be counted on Friday May 5 and the results announced on the Council’s website, charnwood.gov.uk/elections23, and on social media, follow @CharnwoodBC and the hashtag #CharnElects23.

Changes to ward boundaries in Charnwood
A reminder that following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England which included a consultation, the ward boundaries in Charnwood are changing for the elections in May.
There are currently 28 wards in Charnwood and that will be reduced to 24.
Some of the ward names will change. All ward boundaries will change, apart from the wards of Anstey and then Quorn and Mountsorrel Castle.
The number of councillors remains the same at 52 and the new wards will be made up of:
- five single-councillor wards
- ten two-councillor wards
- nine three-councillor wards

COVID-19 spring booster
People who are eligible may be offered a seasonal booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine this spring if they:
- are aged 75 or over (need to have turned 75 on or before 30 June 2023)
- live in a care home for older adults
- are aged 5 or over and have a weakened immune system

Applications now open for next round of Charnwood Community Grants
Community groups and voluntary organisations across Charnwood are being encouraged to apply for a Charnwood Community Grant.
The borough council awards thousands of pounds in community grants each year as part of its commitment to caring for the environment and having a thriving economy.
Grants can be used to support community projects, and groups have until 5pm on Friday, May 12 to apply in the first round of grants for 2023.
A Charnwood Community Grant can provide up to £5,000 to organisations across the borough that are running projects which need funding.
Applications for Charnwood Facility Grants are also now open. These support the renovation, improvement and provision of new community buildings and is available for applications from all Charnwood voluntary and community sector organisations, including sports clubs and physical activity groups.
The maximum facility grant which is available is £20,000 with 50% match funding (minimum total project cost £40,000).
Organisations have until 5pm on Friday, May 12, 2023 to apply for a Charnwood Facility Grant.

Our annual tenant garden competition is returning this year!
The competition s open to Charnwood Borough Council tenants who are being urged to showcase their skills in the garden.
This year, there are eight different categories to enter.
Entries for the tenant garden competition need to be submitted by Friday, June 2 and judging will take place between July 10-14. The winners and runners-up will receive high street shopping vouchers as prizes.

Service spotlight: Charnwood Lifeline can make a difference to you and your family
We are running a series of features about Council services to explain a bit more about what we do.
In this feature, we focus on Charnwood Lifeline which supports independent living and provides peace of mind for residents throughout the borough.
The Lifeline team consists of one lifeline officer, eight controllers, one team administrator, two on-call wardens and one team leader.
We caught up with the service’s team leader Julie Moss, Lifeline officer Michelle Kirkhill and older peoples services team administrator, Michele Lee for a chat about the service and what it can do for people.

Hanging basket competition returns to mark King Charles III coronation
People in Charnwood are invited to take part in a competition to find the best hanging basket to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
The Council’s open spaces partner idverde and Loughborough in Bloom are inviting residents across the borough to get creative and plant-up a hanging basket to celebrate the coronation.
The coronation ceremony to mark the King’s ascension to the throne will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday May 6, 2023.
The prizes up for grabs are:
- first prize – an annual family membership for The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)
- second and third prize - £50 National Garden Gift Voucher.
The closing date for entries is Thursday August 31, 2023.
The judging panel will choose the best 10 hanging baskets which will be shortlisted to the final three during the first two weeks of September.
Competition winners will be announced in September.
